Skinny puppy I thought I had posted this, but it didn't show up. If this is a duplicate, please forgive me. Help, I think my Jasmine is too thin. She is 4 months and weighs exactly 4lbs. She is about 10 inches from the base of her neck to the end of her back. She runs around the yard at about 100 miles per hour all day. My husband is home during the day, and thinks everytime she goes to the patio door, she has to potty so he lets her out. She eats about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of dry dog food I hate to say it but she loves Puppy Chow. The breeder had her on it so I just kept her on it. She does get some snacks, watermelon, strawberries, cooked ground turkey, and she is in love with Lucky Charms. I don't give her the marshmellows, I eat those myself. She also loves the doggy cookies from Petco. Is there anything I can do to get her to gain weight or is that an okay weight? She just looks so long and skinny, I have AKC papers on her that claim that she is a purebred Yorkshire Terrier, but she looks long like a dauschound. hopefully one didn't sneak in the backdoor. |
Hi Seashell Can you see her ribs? I was worried that Stewie was too skinny at 13" inches long and 7.3lbs, but my Vet said he is perfect. You can feel his first two ribs if you try. If you can see them, they are too skinny. Have you been to the vet lately? I'm sure that if there was a weight problem that they noticed, they would have told you. |
Roxy is 8.5 months and TJ is 6.5 months, they both weigh about 3.5 lbs. I too think my guys are a little skinny. I bring TJ to Vet on Friday for his neuter appt, so I will see if he has gained any more weight and see what the Vet thinks about hi scurrent weight. I free feed them Innova Dry for Puppies. It is one of the best dry for for dogs, but whatever you do, slowly introduce a new healthy puppy food to avoid an upset tummy and mushy poops. I was giving my guys honey nut cherrios as potty rewards and some frozen apple bits (for just because :-) BUT I AM STOPPING. They do not need it and it is TOO MUCH SUGAR. TJ has a sensitive tummy and I think these extra sugar treats are giving him irregular poops, SO NO MORE. They are going to be eating strictly healthy dog food and treats and I hope this will work best for them. GOOD LUCK! |
Skinny Puppy No I don't see her ribs, she was at the Vets on Monday and they didn't mention that she was skinny. I was just wondering because my daughter has a puppy a month younger and he is like a little round ball of fur, that Jasmine just looks like a skinny little hot dog dest to him. |
When I fist got Gus he was this tiny little chunkie fur ball. He grew quite a bit the fist 3 weeks here but didn't gain harly any weight. He too was so skinny, I mean I was able to feel his tiny ribs, he ate all the time and the vet said he was just fine. It wasnt till about a month ago he started gaining. He's a tiny furbaby,,,, at a year and 4 months he's only 2.9 lbs. He's only gained a little over a pound since I got him at 10 weeks. So if he loses or gains even an ounce I can tell. As long as the vet says your baby is healthy then I wouldnt worry. They do thicken up, at least Gus did. My husband just brought it to my attention last night on he looks like his chest is filling out and you can't feel his ribs at all anymore. He reminds me of a little mighty mouse. |
If you cant see his ribs hes probably not skinny just small to you. You can ask the vet. If they feel he is too small they can give him a prescription food that has more calories. |
Gus is long and very skinny. He is eleven months, about 4 1/2 pounds and 12 inches from neck to tail. I worried about it too but my vet said he is perfectly healthy - he just has a high metabolism. If you are concerned ask the vet at your next visit but it sounds like she is fine. :) |
