Beneful dog food..BUGS??? Has anyone heard of a problem with what I think might be grain mites in Beneful dog food??? My daughter called me today saying there are little creepy crawly bugs all over her kitchen, walls etc. the bag of Beneful dog food was swarming with them. |
YECK! That makes my skin crawl. |
Disgusting.........they might be moth larvae. I had that happen with parakeet seed many years ago. :(If it were me, I'd switch brands and never go back. Good luck cleaning up the kitchen. |
ewwwwwwwww. I haven't heard anything about that food. You can go to the FDA website and see if anything has been reported yet about it. |

eeeewwww......Throw it out or you'll never get rid of them - sounds like those little 'weebles' - that's gross but the food must be attracting them. You're going to have to take everything out of your pantry or wherever you store the food cause they get into everything You can put your dog food in a big plastic lid container a word of advise -Beneful is full of nasty stuff...I'd def change brands. check all your pasta and rice etc too |
Beneful is crap anyway. That was God's way of telling you to switch. :p Check out Wellness or Artemis brand. Both very quality dog foods, and definitely something I recommend. Beneful is like McDonalds for dogs. They love it cuz it's full of salt and crap. Hope this helps! |

I got a bag of dog food once and after time it was full of wevels. I always put my dogfood in one of those big tin cans that popcorn come in, works wonders to keep out unwanted diners. |
Yucky! |

I second that! We switched to Wellness and chewie like a different dog...except for the chewing...plus he looooves it to death. All I hear coming from the kitchen is crunch, crunch, crunch :p They have some grainless treats I found too, beef jerky I think. It took him time to warm up to those but not too long, LOL! If it wasn't for dogfoodanalysis.com, we'd still be feeding chewie crap :thumbdown |
could it be that bag of dog food attracted them? |
I don't feed this to my dogs. Mine are on Natural Balance. This is my daughter. She called me in panic yesterday saying there were little white bugs that look like a sugar but they move and they are all over. Just trying to find out what kind of bugs they might be. I googled it but couldn't find anything recent. It does appear they may have had this same problem back in 2007. I will try the FDA website. Usually my daughter feeds her dog good quality dog food so I'm not sure why the Beneful. YUK...:eek::eek: |
The bugs are most likely beetle larvae. Dog food is a big attractant for them but they get into dry cereals, pastas, rice etc too. A good way to make sure they aren't in your food is to check the package of the food before you buy it, make sure there aren't any holes or types of openings. When you store the food make sure it's in some sort of sealed container that way it doesn't attract the bugs. Just a little FYI in case anyone here didn't know. My hubby is in public health and he just loves grossing me out with info on all the nasty little bugs..ick! |

If anyone is interested, this is a link to one article about Beneful: snopes.com: Beneful Dog Food |
Would you mind telling us where she bought the food? If you know that is. I used to buy dog food at Walmart(I know better now) and it seems like a lot of there stocking crew get carried away with the box cutters. It wasn't the least bit unusual to see dog food bags covered in duct tape. I never bought one of those bags b/c I was afraid of going through what your daughter is right now. Sometimes you had to move about ten 20lb bags just to find one that was "safe." I once went to grab a bag of pedigree of the shelf the whole thing split open. Someone had cut it and them put it one the shelf where you couldn't see the cut. One of the employees had the nerve to give ME a dirty look. Who ever put that bag out on the shelves after it was cut open and no longer suitable for sale was at fault not me. That was the last time I bought pet food there and I try not to buy much else from them either. I now buy a better quality food from a feed store. |
I just realized I posted the wrong link about the bugs in beneful dog food. Here is the correct one: Re: little white bugs in my dog food |

I can't believe they didn't recall the food. |
:eek::eek: scary!! |
sounds like weevils to me. Weevil eggs stay dormant in the wheat and will hatch out when the temp gets just right. So many of the commercial dog foods get old in the stores from sitting in warehouses and then on shelves. :thumbdown I hope you will find a better quality food for your babies too. Check the ingredients and make sure there is no corn, no wheat or soy, and no by-products. |
hint to kill weevles: freeze your grain product first(flour, corn meal, mixes ect) I guess if you have a big enough freezer you could freeze a bag of dog food |

Would this be allowed if these mites were in human food? I also wonder if they are in Beneful and the food is stored in the back room until the store puts it on the shelves could these mites be infesting human food nearby? YUK:eek::eek::eek: BTW...my daughter doesn't usually buy Beneful...just did so to tide her over til she could get to the pet store. I can assure you...she'll never buy it again!! |

There are BUGS in their food and they won't recall it? It appears like they really don't care at all. :thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown to Purina. Did your daughter talk to Purina/where did you find out that they said they won't recall it? |
