What's good to help him go potty? Sammy has not pooped yet. He's been home since Friday. He has been eating on his regular schedule, which means 2 full meals and today will be three. He's acting like he wants to poop when I take him outside, but I think it hurts cause he can't bend the way they do. Is there any home made remedy or food or something I can buy to make the poop softer ? I guess?? so he doesn't have to push as hard therefore, not put so much weight on his legs? I'm trying to lift him so he's not walking so much on them but I don't know if I'm doing it right. He also does not want to pee. He peed yesterday morning and now he refuses! He was growling at me outside. This is really stressful, I wish I had a full time nurse for him sometimes!! Any suggestion on the food.? |
My vet told me to give my pup a tablespoon of canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) when she wasnt going poo or you can try a teaspoon of mineral oil. I am not sure on the pee problem. |
I agree with the pumpkin for the poop problems. For the pee, he just isn't drinking enough, do you have a filter on your water?? Sometimes they don't like all the heavy metal taste in the water. I got a Brita water filter for my kitchen tap and now all the dogs love the water! Good luck! |
Has he peed yet? If he has not peed - I REALLY think you need to call your vet asap, bc then it sounds like he can't pee, not just that he's holding it - and that could be an emergency. It could also eventually involve his kidneys if he doesn't pee - and you do not want that. For constipation, give him mineral oil - about 1/2 tsp now. In an hour, give another 1/2 tsp; wait a couple more hours and give another 1/2 tsp. - he really should go after that. You could try pumpkin - but I don't think it's "strong" enough to work quickly enough for what this little guy needs. |
He did pee. Yesterday around 5:00. and again this morning and was less hesitant to do so, so that's progress. He will drink the water off of my hands but rarely the bowl, alhtough I did see him drinking once. About the poop, I called the vet last night and they said wait till this evening because sometimes the anestesia will cause their intestines to swell a little. I gave him some pumpkin and Im gooing to try giving him the mineral oil today. |
4 Attachment(s) It's true, after one of my surgeries I didn't go for like 7 days... TMI but give the little guy a hug because I know how he feels. That anesthesia will really slow his system down, plus he is still on meds and who knows how that is affecting it. The pumpkin is a good thing to give him. My Sammy had her surgery on a Thursday and I think she finally pooped Sunday or Monday. She had bandages on so she had to figure out HOW to go, it was awkward and I had to help but once she finally had to go she figured it out. I'm surprised they didn't bandage his legs. Sammy was much happier with the casts on than when they came off. It gave her more stability and she was able to walk around on them. Once they came off it took her a good week to regain her strength, but by then the pain had decreased a little bit. The first 3 pics are a few days after surgery. Then the last one is after the bandages came off. She was much happier before the bandages came off. I feel really bad for your Sammy. It does get better I promise!!! |
Applesauce works also |
he finally went :) The pumpkin worked because I never got to give him the mineral oil. And he did have to figure it out. Erin, I was also surprised they did not give him bandages. The vet said that the bandages don't let the bones heal properly ?? I guess it depends on what doctor you get. BTW, Your little girl looks so cute with those pink bandages on. (not that that makes the surgery any better!) |
