Anal Glands Not a great subject, but I would just like to know how often does a Yorkie (or any dog) need to have the anal glands expressed. I have only taken my Oso to the Vet for his first check up and when he was getting his shots. I don't remember them expressing the anal gland. I'm just concern, since I have never had a puppy before, and I want to make sure he gets checked when he is suppose to. I found a site that shows me how to do this, but I read if it is not done correctly, it can cause harm to him little booty. If you have advise, or share your experience, please write back. |
I let the vet check them and extract them if needed. I also allow my groomer, but she is highly experienced and specializes in yorkies. I would be very careful not t cause injury doing it myself. I tried it once and never again. |
They say if your dog doesn’t have a problem with this, then don't have them expressed for the heck of it. Some puppies have trouble pushing the contents out when they poop, and symptoms that the anal glands need to be expressed are scooting on the floor, and licking the area obsessively. The vet will show you how to do this, and what to look for. If done incorrectly, you can push the contents further up the canal and this can lead to impaction and infection. This use to be a routine procedure among groomers, but now many vets say it isn't necessary and can be dangerous. |
Thanks for the info, Oso does not show any booty scooting on the floor. He must be okay. I really didn't like the vet, so I'm looking for a new one. Being a new mommy to the little guy, I get worried. ;) |
If you don't like the vet, you're wise to find one you like, it's important to be able to trust them, and know they have your best interest at heart. |

Yep. If you're feeding the right food (ie, a food that is "agreeing" with them) - their anal glands should not be filling up much at all. If the glands do fill up a bit, their own firm stools should push the contents out when they poo. If the glands are becoming blocked/full then you probably need to change food. Dogs really should not need their glands emptied, regularly, by a human unless there is something anatomically wrong in the area. :) |
