I hope it isn't LS. His symptoms don't seem to match, but I could be wrong. Warm hugs to you and your little one. Keep us up on his progress.

Can I ask if Liver Shunt can go undiagnosed without any symptoms and found at say 17 or 18 months or could it just come on at this age? Just wondering if there is a certain age it is usually found or if it can just happen later as the dog is older. Thanks. Elaine

Yes, it can go undiagnosed for long time. There are a small percentage of dogs that are actually asymptomatic or have minor symptoms that the owners don't pick up on. Actually, we have a member of this forum who just recently found out her baby had liver shunt and had the surgery done...She found out because her baby started forming ammonium urate stones which are pretty much indicative of a shunt...This baby was 2 yrs old if I remember correctly and she had never really noticed any symptoms, but looking back she was able to see that her baby did exhibit some of the symptoms but they were more minor.

I hope your baby is ok! I know what you mean about the waiting games... I'm currently waiting for mine to "get better or worse". I had a bile acid test done because my baby had a few vomiting episodes. Other than that, she shows no cylinical signs of LS...However, her bile test did come back high, but not high enough to be considered a shunt. All of her other bloodwork/xrays are normal. So, they sent me home with metronidazole and an anti-vomit for a week. I'm supposed to wait it and come back for another blood panel on Wed - then repeat Bile Acid the first of september.
The wait is absolutely killing me...!

I guess I'm saying, I feel your pain.....just try to hang in there and enjoy the time with your baby. You can't worry yourself sick, because more importantly that little furbaby needs to to stay well for him!

Thankyou, i will get a call soon today but then it will be another waiting game for the bile acid. I hope that you get good news and that your baby is ok. Things can change so fast with these little guys. I would like it if you would keep me posted. Sending hugs from Copper and me.

I am so sorry to hear about your little guy. My Paisley had liver shunt surgery last week. I took her in to be spayed at 6 months and her pre spay blood work was "off" so the vet decided to not spay her and do a bile acid test. The test strongly pointed to a liver shunt. With further testing a shunt was diagnosed.

I was shocked because Paisley seemed like a normal, healthy puppy. Paisley was asymptomatic. There was never anything out of the ordinary. She was born with her shunt and my breeder was very cooperative. She refunded me my purchase price to help for cost of treatment and emails me often asking about Paisley's health.

Try and be patient and get your test results and take it one step at a time. I understand how overwhelming this can be. My thoughts are with you.

Thankyou for sharing this story it is comforting to me. honestly when I took him in I didn't think that livershunt was even a suspect, I was thinking epilepsy because he has seemed healthy. I am glad that your breeder has been so supportive in all of this. How is she since surgery?

My little guy went in for his bloodwork for neutering and one of his readings were a bit high (liver function). My vet did not think it was a cause for concern but she did prescribe Hepato support capsule to ensure liver function is working well and will remove anesthesia from system properly. SHe will retest before surgery. I hope it is not a sign of LS. This is very worrisome.

Copper is in right now for his Bile Acid test. Hoping for a healthy result. His first blood test came back ok for liver function, but high numbers for kidney function. I feel a little lost when he is not with me.

How high was the BUN?

They will give me a copy of all the results tomarrow with the results from the Bile acid. I honestly was so nervous when the call came in that I don't remember any of the numbers. I was going to write them down but litterally got sick to my stomach from nerves. I know I needed to pull it together but all of this has been so fast. I know that the BUN was realitively high, I will post numbers when i get the rest of the results. Thankyou for asking. On a happy note I haven't seen a seizure in 24 hours:)

AmyChristine 08-12-2008 12:43 PM

I took him off of Orijen just in case and with in 8 hours the siezures stopped I haven't seen a siezure since, I am hoping that he doesn't have LS and maybe is just sensitive to the higher amount of protien.

High liver enzymes can be a sign of LS or MVD.
I would get him bile acid tested before surgery.
That way, if there is a problem (hopefully not) and it needs to be corrected surgically, it could be done at the same time as the neuter.
