Max has a drinking problem Hello, Max is really lazy about drinking his water. Even though the weather is really hot, he's played boisterously, or he's just came home from a walk, he just won't drink. I have been forced to make him drink from a syringe, which he does quite happily. I've tried changing his bowl but won't drink unless I let him lick from my fingers. Does anyone know how to end this problem? It really worries me. |
Have you tried having him drink from a water bottle. They use then for bunnies etc. Or try ice cubes. |
I've tried that Patty. Max won't even look at it. He turns his face away from the trough. I bought the bottle for car journey's and for his walks. |
Is his water in a metal bowl? I heard some dogs are afraid of metal bowls. I thought for sure you were going to say he dunks his whole face in. That's what mine do! |
I've changed his drinking bowl, because I though his original one was too deep. He is actually on his third bowl. He only started to eat again after I changed from his dish which was the same as his drinking bowl. They were ceramic. |
Could you add water to his food and let the food soak up the water? Do you feed canned food? If so, this is high in moisture, so maybe he's getting some moisture from that... |
Max is only eating scrambled egg, chicken and rice at the moment. He was neutered on Tuesday, and had two teeth removed. We have had really hot weather, and Max has not coped well with it. We think this and the problem he's had with his teeth has affected his appetite. His appetite was really poor. It's turned really cool now, and the offending teeth have been removed, now all he wants to do is eat. |
Kirby will not drink either so no matter what food I feed him, I put a good serving of water in the same bowl a nd he willl lap that up. Mid day I put jsut a bit of cheese , eggs, something solid etc.... and then water especially after a walk. Also he will drink plain water if we are drinking it and we pour it into a very tiny cup and he thinks he is getting our water. However we dont like to teach him to eat the food that was served to us , we rarely do this. |
It seems like my little guy doesn't drink much either. But, he does drink. I change the water in his bowls twice a day so it's always fresh. Good luck with your picky drinker. |

If you are giving all homecooked, wet foods he probably doesn't need much water. Ellie eats homecooked and only drinks occasionally because her food is about 75% moisture. If you go back to kibble, you can soak it in water so he has no choice or feed canned which would probably be better anyway (or balance the homecooked recipe and continue feeding that). |
Sammy will nto drink to much either. I have to take him to the water bowl and he looks at me like I'm stupid. So I jsut stand ther and say "water" and keep doing it until he drinks. He's stubborn. He also like the bottle though. Before his surgery I had started taking it with me when we go on walks an he drinks more from the bottle than the bowl |
Max ate and drank well - until we went on holiday, in May. Then he became very difficult with both food and water. He's been eating well since he was neutered and had the baby incisors taken out. He just won't drink, except from the syringe, or from my fingers. I have seen him licking the wet grass and rain water collected in pots. If I catch him doing this I pull him away. Our climate is wet, and there are always slugs and snails. I don't want him to eat them. |
