How do you feed two or more?????? I am wondering how you all that have two or more pups feed you furbutts?? Moose is 22 months and has always been "free fed". Mimi is 15 months and we have had her now for 2 months. Moose would eat what he wanted, when he wanted before Mimi came. Mimi on the other hand will eat her serving right then and right now and then try to eat Moose's meal!!! (I think maybe she had to fight for meals before we got her) :( I have been seeing some "food aggression" between the two the last few days. :( Does anyone have any ideas and help on how to handle this?? This is getting frustrating and scary. |
I kinda have the same problem with my 3. I think Sophie the youngest, had to fight her sister for her food cause she always gobbles up the food like it's a race, and London eats slowly and takes her time and is aggressive and doesn't let anyone else eat until she's done. And poor Teddy is like the last to eat, ladies first. I don't free feed cause of this, i feed them everyday at the same time but because London is very aggressive i have to feed her away from the other 2 or she'll fight with them |
I feed my 4 3 times a day and my Pom eats in the kitchen and my 3 yorkies eat on my bed. I can't free feed because they are all chow hounds and my Pom has Cushings disease which makes her hungry all the time. |

I thought aww, how sweet of him. What a gentleman. Well, she would end up eating more than her share. (She is 7 lbs and he is 14 lbs.) She should NOT be eating as much as him! |

I was thinking maybe I should separate them while eating. |
I have 5 dogs and I feed them all the same time every day also. But I put the bowls down first to the two that eat the slowest, and the other 3 in the same room, but apart from the other two. I do stand and watch them to make sure they all get their food. I guess with them knowing I am there watching them, they eat, and walk away. I use to take Raindrop and put her in the playpen because she was so little, I was afraid the others would push her away from her food. But now that she is 7 months she can hold her own, even tho she only weighs around 3 lbs. |

yep same here, i would try to put the bowls next to each other but London would eat out of hers, them eat out of the other's bowls and try to have them all to herself, she eats like a bird but even if she's not eating she doesn't like them to eat, she just wants to control everything so i have to feed her away from them. And i have to make sure Sophie eats cause she is shy and will not get her share if i don't make sure she does, but if i homecook something she will chow it down and it causes the girls to fight. Even when she ate enough and i try to take her away from the food she will try to eat it still by biting mid air lol And Teddy knows he can eat out of Sophie's bowl but not London's so i have to hold him and let her eat, it's very complicated and i dread it everyday lol I need ceasar milan! |
I feed my two and sometimes guest Yorkies. I've fed up to five at a time. I place all the bowls down at the same time in different places in the kitchen and stand in the middle to police. If you're seeing a little food aggression, put that dog's bowl a little farther away and stand between. That should help. I feed twice a day and they all woof down the food. I used to free feed Sampson, but had to change when I got Daisy. They all learn that when the food is down, they'd better eat. Sampson has a little deal worked out with one guest dog, Flirt. She's saves him a few kibbles and he saves her a bite of homemade food. It's very cute! |
Pebbles has been free fed since we brought her home at 6 months last year. She always has had a food aggression problem and still does. When we brought Doodlebug home at the end of June I was worried she would be aggressive with the new puppy. She actually suprised me when she wasn't but she turned into a piggy. I would put down Doodles' food and she would gobble it up and Doodles would be looking at an empty bowl. This went on for about a week until Pebbles got sick from eating too much. Now she has learned her lesson and they actually SHARE a bowl for food and water. I'm not sure what I'm going to do since Pebbles really needs to switch from puppy food to doggy food sooner than later. I guess wanted I want to say is if my two worked it out maybe there is hope????:confused::p |
I leave dry food out all day, they don't eat much of it. In the evening, I have a double bowl and feed them canned mixed with dry. |

Mine eat twice a day. Bubba eats outside the crate while Sissy eats in the crate. Otherwise Bubba would eat Sissy's. |
Linda, So sorry you are having problems with this! I think it is manageable though. I have 5 and have them on a twice a day feeding schedule. They each have their own bowl and each bowl is always put down in the same spot, so each furry has his or her own spot in the kitchen where their bowl goes. They all know because at feeding time, they are all standing in their own spots, lol. AprilLove and Nappy have separate bowls, but in the same stand, so they are right next to each other when they eat and they go back and forth between each others bowls, (like you described with M & M) but I have watched them enough now, that I know they end up eating close to their needed amount. They are only 1/2 lb apart in weight. Rozi is still learning, but has her spot down, lol Mimi is a lot smaller than Moose, so I would give her a bowl that is going to look full when you put her food in it. Same with Moose, give him a bowl that looks full when you have his amount in it. It may take him a little more time to get used to the idea of scheduled feedings, because he was free fed. But if you do it at about the same times every day, separate their bowls and give them about 15 to 20 minutes and pick up the bowls. I never leave the bowls down, all of mine have learned to eat it when it is there and they always get every last bit in their bowl) No one is starving, and this way I can monitor when someone is getting overweight, or loosing weight, or possible sick, etc. and adjust it accordingly They didn't learn it overnight, and each time a new puppy comes, (like three times in the past 2 years, lol) it takes some time to train them not to go to every one elses bowl and try to gobble it all, lol. But they do learn if you're consistent with it. You may want to stay with them when you feed them so you can monitor it, and correct if one is eating out of the wrong bowl. It will get better! |

Linda, it might be a good idea to separate them for a while if the aggression has you worried. Get them used to the bowl they will use and they'll learn which bowl belongs to who. Free feeding when you have multiple furrbutts is not a good idea, IMO, because if it ever comes a time when you have to feed different foods because of illness or health issues, or what have you, then it is even harder to try to change the routine (2 of mine are on different foods because of health issues) . Not to mention, scheduled feedings make it easier to know poop and pee schedules too :) |
We put Jewels up on the table or bench when we feed them or Chachi would eat her food |
