Vaccinations!? My baby Roxy has always had reactions to vaccinations and also has a liver disease. Her rabies is due and I really don't want to give it to her in fears of losing her or making her very sick. I know the law requires it but I just want to know how others feel about giving their yorkie babies vaccinations? |
Are there exemptions in CA for this? Sometimes if there is a medical problem, your vet will sign a waiver and you don't have to give rabies. Have you asked about this? Some vets will say that liver disease is a good reason not to vaccinate and others will say if it isn't that bad, then vaccinate. Is it liver shunt? |
it is hepatoportal microvascular dysplasia. I would rather not give her the shot and yes I have heard about the waiver and I am going to speak to my vet about it. I live in a very nice area in california and I don't see when she could ever get rabies. I don't know which risk is higher, giving her the rabies shot and something terrible happening or not giving her the shot and her contracting the disease. In reality which is more likely in the nice area I live? I figured this forum would understand because we all have yorkies and know how sensitive they are. |

It really isn't bad enough to ask for a waiver for us. On the other hand, the insert in the rabies vaccines says, "For healthy animals only". You could search online for reported rabies cases in your area. It is best avoided if you can do that but you will be taking a slight risk. I personally would take the risk if I had that choice. Something else to take into consideration, do you have a bat or rodent problem? You don't have to answer that.:) |
You can get a waiver for it. For my yorkie, the risks of giving the rabies vaccine certainly outweigh the benefits. He has chronic liver problems and he has a history of hepatic encephalopathy including seizures... |
It's good to know that other people know what I'm going through. Where I live there hasn't been a rabies case in many years in domestic animals. I get afraid my baby can get rabies by licking the saliva of a rabid animal thats on the ground. I have no idea if that is true though. Is their anyone who does not give their yorkies the rabies shot? |
I would definately consult your vet. about this. I am in Ca. too, and even in nice areas their are always risks of wild animals carrying rabies. Anther th ing to consider, is if a dog bites a human being, and is reported, then the dog will need to be tested for rabies... It is a test that is performed on the brain. I understand that your dog is having liver complications, and may already be compromised. I am certain your vet will let you know what is best for your dog. Getting a wavier is understandable . :aimeeyork |
There is no provision for a waiver from the rabies vaccine in California law: http://www.theanimalcouncil.com/file...ION_121575.pdf With that said, if your dog is not current on her vaccine, they don't throw you in jail. :) The risk is that if she were to bite someone or be exposed to rabies, she would have to be quarantined and/or could get the disease. That is the same scenario as states who do allow a veterinarian's waiver. I am in the same situation with Lady. At thirteen with both diabetes and liver damage from years of anti-seizure medications, she can't have a rabies vaccine. The one four years ago nearly killed her. I have minimized her risk by only letting her out on my deck now and walking her in her stroller. At her age, that's fine with her. In fact, she loves her stroller rides! |
I have also forgot to mention that she has had reactions to shots which have gotten worse. She would not move without yelping and would fall over when she tried to stand up. I know the law tells me to get her the rabies shot but when you love your baby so much you never want to do anything that will harm her. That is why this decision is so hard for me. I know there are risks but sometimes I think giving her the shot will be more harmful then not giving her the shot. |

I decided not to take the risk with the rabies shot for Lady so I just adjusted her lifestyle to avoid exposure. My vet was 100% in support of my decision. |
I agree with titering. I ONLY give what the law makes me give, and Abbie is good on rabbies until '10. By then, I'm hoping the veterinary profession finds another way to make $$$, and stops pushing unnecessary vaccs. My Mozart is going on 15, and I WILL NOT subject him to more vaccines. My vet understands, reminding me that if he bites someone, he will need to be quarantined. |

I would talk to your vet about how they feel about skipping it because of the severity of the problem with the reactions. I know Dr. Dodds is in CA and she doesn't vaccinate animals with diseases where the vaccine could make the disesae worse as far as I know. |
After reading another thread on vaccines, I've decided not to do it anymore(mine have had their puppy shots). We can get a waiver in KY for rabies. I was talking to my mother-in-law last week about it and she told me she hasn't given her Coton's vaccines in years because they are never out of her yard and the other dogs that come to visit are vaccinated. Also check out the thread from Lisa & Pic about the problems vaccinations caused them. It is very informative. |

Vaccinations should only be done on healthy pets, according to my vet. |
