What "people" food is okay? I've been here for a little bit and seen that people feed their dogs people food. Our dogs only get dog food but I was just wondering, what people food is okay to give to the dogs? List everything please! :D My mom gives 'em scrambled eggs sometimes but what else is there? And (obviously :p), nothing high in fat because my Yorkie has had pancreatitis so he gets nothing high in fat. |
The list of things they can have is endless. They should NOT have: Chocolate Macadamia Nuts Grapes Raisins Onions Garlic (debatable) Fatty meat Excessive salt Artificial sweetener (especially xylitol) The CAN have: Boneless skinless chicken with no fat Raw vegetables (bell peppers, carrots, lettuce) Cooked vegetables/Starches/Carbs (peeled potato and sweet potato, squash, rice, pasta, broccoli, oats) Fruits (melon, peeled and cored apple, berries) Dairy if not lactose intolerant (plain yogurt, low fat and preferrably low sodium cottage cheese...ask vet before feeding to a pancreatitis patient) |

I want to add a couple more things to the DO NOT FEED list: Seeds from fruits like apples Pits like peach pits, avocado pits, plum pits, etc. These two things are toxic to dogs. Also, avoid any fatty foods or seasoned foods... They can have a ton of different veggies. If you are feeding people food for *nutritional value, veggies should be cooked or pulverized as dogs can't break veggies down like humans can if they are not cooked/pulverized. |
I thought I read somewhere that dogs should not eat pork or pork products; is this true? |
i was wondering this myself. any thoughts on cheese and ice cream? |

It is probably not the best choice for Yorkies. However, a large dog with no health issues could eat lean pork. I wouldn't recommend it because there are better things to feed but to say it is off limits for dogs I think is not right. |

I prefer not to unless it is cottage. Small amounts of ice cream are okay as long as it doesn't contain artificial sweetener. |
They can also have split peas, lentils, dried fruits, natural peanut butter, boiled eggs (as well as scrambled) beef, bison, fowl, rabbit, poultry, venison, yogurt cheese, cheddar cheese, (not cheese "product" or cheese "food") pasta noodles and I'm sure there are more that haven't already been mentioned so far. |
Oh yes, and goat cheese. :) Must not leave that out or the girls will scold me. They love that and the Yogurt cheese. :) |
