Recommended food brand for Yorkie Puppy? Hi everyone, getting my yorkie puppy from the breeder in two weeks yay! :D puppy will be about 8 weeks old when i go and pick him up. can anyone suggest to me a good (nutritious) food brand for a growing yorkie puppy? thanks!! |
Royal canin#33 I got mine two weeks ago. The breader sold a bag of that to me, because she wanted to make sure that is what I will feed them. Ast the breader to sell some of the same thing she feeds him. Also, 8 weeks is two young. The last vacination is at 12 to 14 weeks. After she finished that bag, I bought6 yams for small breed's puppys. That one has a yorkie puppy as an ilustration, and looks and smell the same as Royal canin#33 so she did not notice the difference:animal-pa:animal-pa |
Eight weeks is a little too young to separate a Yorkie from its mom and litter mates.See if your breeder will hold the puppy for a couple extra weeks. Twelve weeks is recommended but the really small ones may need to stay even longer. When you get your puppy, making sure he/she eats properly is the most important thing. Sometimes it takes a bit for the puppy to feel comfortable enough in its new home to eat. With these little ones, you cannot let them go without eating. Make sure you have some nutri-cal on hand when your new puppy comes to live with you. You will want to keep your puppy on whatever the breeder was using to avoid stomach upset. If you decide to change the food later, transition slowly to the new food. You have a few weeks before getting him so take that time to get ready. You'll want to have all your supplies on hand and also to puppy proof your home. Also, take some time to read some threads here. You'll see many where people have trouble getting their new puppy to eat and what can be done about it. BTW, welcome to YorkieTalk. Good luck with your new puppy. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. It's so important to make sure you're prepared and that everything goes smoothly when bringing a new puppy home. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |

I got Duke when he was young too and the breeder was feeding his parents Bil Jac, the vet had me feed him science diet wet food in addition to adding water to the Bil Jac that he was supposedly eating at the breeder. |
I got Baylee when she was 7 weeks old. I just started her on Wellness Puppy. When I went to Petco and bought her food they had a sale going where you got 4 cans of wet food free when u bought a 3 to 6 pound bag of the Wellness. So I have been giving her half of a 6 oz. can in the morning and the dry during the day. IF she finishes they dry she sometimes get the other half of the can in the evening. She has been doing great and the vet says she is very healthy!! |
i got riley when he was 8 weeks old (he's 12 now) and he was a stubborn eater at first.. it was funny because the breeder told me to feed him "high quality puppy food" and she gave me a bag of iams and pedigree for puppies  i guess that was "high quality" to her.. after a TON of research and help from the ladies at the natural pet food store i have him on innova puppy wet food and he just started eating orijen puppy kibble, he loves both :) riley went through 2 tubes of nutrical the first 2 weeks i had him so thats a good thing to have  |
thanks everyone for all the feedback :) i read that yorkie puppies can be separated from the mom+litter mates btwn 8-12 weeks. ill check with the breeder and see if the puppy is indeed ready to be separated. yes, def nutra cal! i've heard nothing but good reviews on it. i understand that i should just keep the puppy on its current food the breeder is feeding. thing is, the breeder is currently using Black Gold Puppy Food and i read some not so great reviews on it. i think i'll eventually wean the puppy off of that (gradually, of course) and switch to a better food brand. |

8) All puppies leaving the breeders possession will be a minimum of twelve (12) weeks of age to facilitate adequate socialization as well as appropriate emotional and temperament development through interaction with siblings, dam and other dogs. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Also, you should definitely not switch foods for a week or two. Your puppy will need time to adjust to it's new environment. Now is not the time to switch up it's food, too. |
I use Innova Puppy for all of my pups under 12 months. They scarf it up and it is human grade all natural. That makes me happy. Peace and Love, |
My Poppy eats Life Abundance and love love loves it, and of course it is really healthy. Ms.Helen(his breeder) told me what she was feeding him and I read how great it was and continued on with it. Just wonderful no problems at all. |

Canadie has been taken over by Diamond dog food I used Canadie for a while on all my yorkies and they seemed to be fine. I just bought a new bag of food and instantanly they all got the runs. I don't feed table food and for all of them to get sick was interesting. I went back to my dog store and they told me that they changed the formula removing rice and adding barley. He showed me the bags and showed me the ingredients. I immediately asked for a different brand. So as to be not in haste I did some research and I changed to Innova brand becasue that seemed to be the best. As I was in the store at least 2 other people came in with the same story about loose stools. The manager did not want to switch out the food however, I know the food is garanteed. He did take 8 dollars off of the bag because it was open. I don't have any more runny stools....So he could keep the 8 dollars... |
