Food after tooth extraction
 

Okay so Layla had one tooth extracted on Wednesday, and the vet tech told me to feed her wet food for about a week, and the paper she gave me says 8-10 days. Layla has allergies to almost everything but I have found she does not show symptoms when she eats fish-based food, so she has been on Orijen 6 Fish.
So yesterday I went to the store and told the girl about the situation and she suggested California Natural salmon and sweet potato. I brought a few cans home and read the label which said "3/4 to 1 1/4 can per day per 15 lbs"... Layla is about 9 lbs, and she was pretty hungry, so I put about 1/2 the can in her bowl and she started eating. About 10 minutes later I came back to check and most of it was still there. She wouldn't eat so I put the rest back in the fridge.
This morning her tummy was grumbling when I fed her breakfast. I gave her about 1/4 of the can and she sniffed it and walked away. Before I left for work she had only eaten about 1/2 of that.
I have zero experience with feeding wet. Would she maybe just get full faster? It does have quite a strong fishy smell that smells up the whole house, and maybe that's a little too much for her? Should I just try mushing up her kibble with water? Should I mix kibble with the wet? Should I take these cans back and try something else that she MIGHT be allergic to? We are leaving today for the long weekend and in the small town we're going to there won't be anywhere to get good food.
I'm at a loss of what to do. Any suggestions?

Dogs should eat more wet than dry.
When Ellie had teeth pulled the vet told us to soak her kibble in water.
It took a long time to get it all soft, so you may have to do it for a few hours.
Then at the end of 7-8 days you can start to soak it less and less...

I'm not sure I'd want to leave wet kibble out for too long.
You could probably refrigerate it.

I had a few little tins of Cesar in my cupboard from ages ago, and that's what I fed her when she first got home from the vet because the store wasn't open. I know it's bad!!!! But she gobbled it down like it was the best treat ever. I know my poor baby isn't a huge fan of the fish :( I think I'll try soaking her kibble. If she refuses to eat more fish food after supper I might have to give her one more tin of Cesar to get her through the day. I'll soak her kibble overnight. Thanks for the advice!

Well, honestly if I fed Ellie dog food and she was in pain and happy with Cesars, I might let her get away with eating it for a week.:rolleyes:

If she doesn't mind the kibble soaked though, I would try that before Cesars.

Pixie had 5 teeth extracted in June and vet said soft food for a week. Within an hour of being home she was chewing on a hoof. She had 2 front and 3 back teeth pulled. She eats soft so that wasn't a problem but by the next day she was eating her hard bisquits. Maybe just offer her moistened kibble and see.

Thanks for the replies :) I went home on my lunch break and put a layer of kibble in the bottom of Layla's bowl and put some warm water overtop. By the end of my break the outsides were pretty mushy but still hard inside. I gave her one and she took it under the table (where she always takes things to eat) but she just put it down. But before I left I couldn't find it! I left the kibble with the water down for her and we'll see if she eats any before we leave later today. It was just one tooth and she doesn't seem to be in too much pain, she's running around, throwing her ball and chasing after it.
I think I might take some Cesar with me, if it makes her happy lol
