Hungry on raw I just started feeding my little one (2.5lbs) NV raw chicken or lamb. She loves it and licks it with gusto off my fingers, but she seems to be hungery. She will be a year and a half in Septmember. I have been giving her about 1.5 medallians a day. Is this enough? It seems like so little. I think I fed her much more when I was home cooking. My parents are starting to make me feel guilty because they act like I am starving her. I probably was overfeeding when I was home cooking, but gee, it just does seem like so little. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks, Shellie:) |
It is enough :). I know it *seems* weird. Because the medallions are so nutrient dense, you feed much less in volume than you would kibble. It's sort of the same concept as when you feed a premium kibble compared to a "junk kibble" - you feed less of the premium kibble bc it is more nutrient dense. Are you totally confident that her weight is still 2.5? For comparison, my Marcel weighs 3.4 and he gets a total of 2 medallions per day. :) |
it is enough..i know it seems little but like anne said it is packed with all the nutrients. My Tumi is 3.4lb and Gracie is 3.8lb. They both get 2 each per day. My little Tsubi is a 6 months old at 2.2 lb and she gets 1.5 medallion in the morning and 1 at night. I give her more since she is still a growing puppy. |
Hi Shellie! I know what you mean. Nolee seems to be hungry all the time. I have been feeding raw for about a month now. Not sure if I am feeding too little or too much. I feed him 2oz meat and 2oz organs once a day and then 2 oz meat in evening and a bone for chewing. I guess its like they say, dogs can eat all the time. |
I don't know anything about raw feeding, but whenever dogs are hungry continuously it typically means they're not getting enough food/protein. |
Is it that she is hungry or does she just like it so much that she can't stop? All dogs are different. Some require more, some less. That sounds like a typical amount of NV for her weight. I think you will have to wait and see how it goes. If she starts losing you will just have to increase it and if she starts gaining you will have to decrease it. Ellie wants to eat all the time but she gets a LOT of food. She is still skinny though. She likes to beg but when she is truly very hungry I can sometimes tell. She just doesn't let up. If, for some strange reason, you feed her a lot more than what the feeding chart says to and she is losing weight, then I would be concerned that something isn't right. |
Hi all, Thanks again for all your wonderful, welcome and informative knowledge and advice. I am relieved, to say the least. I still wonder if it is okay to feed her some snacks. I gave her a raw carrot to knaw on and she did bite tiny pieces off, but then she got bored. Also, I'm going to need some very very tasty treats/snacks for training purposes. What do you all suggest? She is not house trained yet, does not yet walk on a leash, comes to me inconsistently, and really does not do anything by command, not even sit, so I have some training to do. What is the best treat to use under these circumstances? By the way, I did weigh her. When I first got her, she was between 1.8 and 2 lbs. I think it was her ideal weight. In the last few months while home cooking, she went up to 2.6 to as high as 2.8 lbs. This does not sound like alot, but believe me, it made a difference!!! Yes Ellie May, she loved to share our food (unseasoned of course) at the dinner table. She loved to nibble on fruit, raw veggies, yogurt, cottege cheese, cheese of any kind, peanut butter, etc. etc. She just LOVES food!!!! I think she misses this, I really do, even if she is not Really hungry. Today she was 2.4 lbs. She loves to eat-to say the least. So losing a few ounces may be a good thing. Even though the numbers are only tiny ounces, on her-- it really makes a difference. I can't even feel any ribs at this point. Her frame is so very small. When home cooking I was worried about her weight because she is so verrrry verrrry tiny, and I worried about the effects on her joints and skeletal system. I also had her spayed during that time. I think I was over feeding her because I was trying to compensate for not being able to get any supplement into her. Any thoughts? Shellie |
