My pup won't eat in the morning : ( Help! Darwin started refusing to eat his morning kibble a few days ago. The first time, I hand fed him, and he ate about 1/2 of the portioned kibble, then the next day, he pushed it around in the bowl and wouldn't touch it, so I mixed in some shredded cheese, and he ate it. Now today, he completely ignored it and ran away from the food. Does this mean I have to switch kibble? At night, I mix a couple tablespoons of wet in with dry, and he readily eats it, no problem. I want him to learn to eat dry food, so I don't want to give him wet in the morning too...He is not a teeny pup, 5.5 lbs, but still, if he doesn't eat in the morning, he has to wait till 6pm for dinner. What do I do? |
When Mingtoy do that . I take her bowl away and give it to her later . Don't worry a healthy dog will never starve his self to death . |
I'm not sure if this advice is 100% accurate but it may be worth a shot. You have two options that I can think of. Option 1: You can completely stop mixing his dry food with wet food and he will eat when he is hungry. It's instinct to eat. This may not be the best method but I have heard of it being done. Option 2: You can mix. Example: Day 1- Morning and evening mix dry and wet 50/50. Day 2- Morning and evening mix dry and wet with more dry then wet. And so on until you have just dry food in there. Hopefully it helps. Otherwise, if either of them do not work, it may help to switch dog food. What kind of dry dog food are you using right now? Jack is almost 6 months and eats Iams smart puppy small breed. He just loves it. Good luck! |
Is there a reason he can't have wet in the mornings and evenings? Premium canned food is less processed than kibble and contains more moisture, so it's actually better for them. There are several good canned foods out there. |
Isn't canned worse for their teeth? Can you mix the wet and dry in the am? He like it wel in the pm. |

I also think he's holding out for the wet/dry mix as well. He ate the entire bowl tonight...reason why I don't mix for both meals is b/c I want him to eat at least 1 meal of dry kibble for his dental health. I get worried when he doesn't eat in the morning b/c then I leave for work and he's home for about 7 hours without any food in his tummy. I sprinkled some kibble in his ex-pen along with a few treats and I came home he didn't touch any of it. He's on wellness super5mix for puppies, dry and wet, and at first he loved it and would even turn in circles in the morning when I put the bowl down, but it's been about a month and he's starting to get picky. Oh - also, has anyone ever heard of lammy curls? I bought a pack today, but they seem kinda greasy for being just roasted lamb ears. Are they safe?? |

i have no idea what lammy curls are. i only give natural treats and chews |
I am not sure why you can't leave his food out for him? You might just have to leave it in his pen until he gets hungry enough to eat it. Schedule feedings can always come later. What's important is to put an end to his pickiness so he will eat dry food for you. |
I guess I'm going to try leaving the food out for him all day tomorrow if he still refuses to eat it in the morning. The one other time I tried that, he ended up splashing water in the food bowl and mushing the food around instead of eating it... |
