Question about switching my pup over to a better food.
 
Hello YT community! I have been lurking for a few days as I am getting a Yorkie/Maltese mix (morkie) in a few days. Please bear with me, as I am brand spankin new to all of this lol....

I have been doing research on the food, and I really want to hear from those that have weened their pups over from grain-based to meat-based foods. He is currently on Eukanuba and after doing research I am wanting to switch over to a meat-based. Am I crazy for thinking meat-based is that much better or is the research that I've been doing completely bogus? I am brand new to this dog stuff, and I want to do it right by feeding my baby the healthiest diet possible.

Those of you that have switched your dogs over to meat-based, have you noticed a difference in their health?

I am sorry if I sound like a complete moron lol. I am really trying to learn and I hope that I can get on the right track with the help of you fine people :). Thank you so much!

Not at all. We all have to learn sometime. I have switched my babies over and the biggest change I have noticed is the extra sheen to their coats. The shampoo and conditioner I use have stayed the same, and it made them shinny and soft.. but when I changed their food... it didn't take long to notice the difference it made in their coats. They have more energy and poop less... sounds bad but they are digesting the food instead of it going right through.

First of all, great job for doing your research! I have always fed Franklin high quality food and have fed Maggie high quality food since we've had her so I can't really vouch for any improvements but I do know that my babies are doing beautifully! Their coats and soft and shiny and they hardly ever itch. Their poops are small and firm and less stinky.

As far as foods go, there are many many great brands out there. My personal favorites are Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, and Ziwi Peak. I recommend those because they are completely grain-free or at least offer a grain-free kibble. Other good brands with grains are Nature's Variety Prairie, Canidae, Innova, California Natural, and Merrick.

Two other high quality foods are Evanger and Party Animal canned, and Timberwolf Wild and Natural kibble. This variety of Timberwolf has really tiny kibble, smaller than cat kibble, great for puppies. FYI, my vet said is is quite alright to feed an all life stages food to a puppy.

Wow, thank you to all for your input! It's all incredible and appreciated so much! It seems like there are many quality dog foods out there that I had no clue about. Did it take your dog a while to get used to the new food, the ones who switched your dogs over? I can't wait til I get him off of his current food and onto one of these suggested foods. Baby steps though, for sure.

Any time my dogs get a new food, they gobble it up! Haha I guess it's just something different. When you do decide to change, do it slowly! I would start off by adding 25% new food, 75% old food for a couple of days, then do 50/50, and then eventually do 75/25. Do this over two weeks. Sometimes the transition can be tough on them and they'll have diarrhea.. This should prevent that.
