I worried my puppy is getting really fat! :eek:I have a 15 week old puppy, he is very short and stocky little puppy. But I am afraid he is getting too fat. I have a female I bought from a different tate she is exactly the same height as him. The Vet said she is an ideal weight. He feels heavy when I pick him up! My vet sad if he is too heavy it can be bad for his knees and hips. How can I put a growing puppy on diet. He is always hungry. I always know where to find him. He eats his food then he wants to go in everyone else crate and eat thier food. When its play time Jag always disapears and we know where he at looking for food. He weighs 3.11lbs. I know that may not sound like much but he is has very short legs and is small, when I got him at 10 weeks he weighed 1.6.lb. He is getting as wide as he is tall. My female weighs 2.10lb. I just want him a a healthy weight how do I do that while he grow, what do I feed him. I feed them Ukanuba Puppy now. |
Poor chubby baby...LOL. A couple of suggestions.... Feed him the exact portion as written on their food. Usually this is 1/3 to 1/2 cup a DAY. I'd limit his treats too. Looks like it means you will have to restrict his access to the other's food too. Also puppy formulas contain more protein than the adult formula. If his activity doesn't use all that protein...guess what happens? It turns into fat. Reese nor Reggie have ever eaten puppy food. They both ate adult formula. I feed all of my Wellness fish and sweet potato. |
I too have a piglet that loves to eat!!! He has gained 1 lb in a 6 week period. I got him at 1.65 lb and now 6 weeks later he is 2.65 lbs. The vet said he should not have gained that much weight for his size and frame (very short, thin legs also). I had switched him to Canidae All Stages food, but now I have to find something else. He is always bloated looking, he gets NO treats so that is not the problem. What other dog food should I try with him?? He did NOT like Natural Balance but LOVES Canidae. |
I agree, the extra weight will be bad for his knees and it may cause him to develop structural problems trying to compensate for the undue strain on his growing joints. I would switch him to adult maintenance and control his intake, and give treats only as a training aid and in very small amounts. Mine get 1/4 cup twice a day and anything they don't eat in thirty minutes gets picked up. I know some don't recommend feeding in the crate but all of mine eat only in the crate, this way I know exactly how much everyone is eating and I can make small changes easily. Of course I make special arrangements for a puppy that is picky or not thriving, but that doesn't sound like a problem in your case! |
I read that you can mix cooked FRESH green beans and add it to the food as a 'filler'.....There's been several people who had sucess with that but I've never tried it - and as with any advise on these sites - CHECK with the vet first. You want to make sure he's getting everything he needs. |
I hate to say it but I am thinking that my little one is a tad underweight because I can feel his ribs and spine but when I took him to the vet for his pre operation check up they didn't say he needed to gain weight. I am feeding my puppy IAMS puppy small breed formula which you can buy at like Pet Co and such. I was told it as a good brand and moderately priced. Jack seems to like it and eats more than he had with the other food. Hope you find something he likes. |
I monitor his weight everyday because I am concerned, he seems to waddle compared to m other yorkies and get out of breath sooner. He got up to 3.15,but now we are back at 3.12, so I figure any loss for a growing puppy means he's lossing fat. We even take him swimming. We have a salt water pool, it makes their coats really soft as a bonus. So weare trying, I didnt change his diet, I have just stopped the all day buffet and cut off access to the crates of Bella and Shyloh. It's hard though because Bella and Shyloh are grazers and love to eat their food all day, but they love Jag too so they are not fussing too much. We are all doing what we have to help the rolley polley out. Hopefully soon he will lose that title. Thanks everyone! Pam Bella Jag Shyloh:p |
If your pup is that hungry all the time, are you sure there isn't a medical problem going on (worms, pancreas problems)? Ellie would eat all the time if I let her but she enjoys play time as well... |
WEll he was just wormed I mean like this week and he has not missed a single vet visit. He is due in 3 weeks for Shot. But I would think that with all that eating and as round as he is he just got fat. He is responding to the cut back in his diet so I think we are heading in the right direction. I am going to put him on adult food as soon as I can get to the store. I an disabled so I can't get out right now. But he is responding well and thats a good sign. I can see the difference. I love that little man! |
I would love to see a pic of the chubby one.. he must be so cute!! But ya to much extra weigh is unhealthy. |
I'll try to post on my pictures but I not really very good at computers |

It's pretty easy...just be sure you have them sized 600 x 600 pixels. I'd like to see the rolley polley too. |
