What heart worm prevention should I use? Hello, My puppy is 6months old now, and I'm wondering what brand of heart worm prevention should I use? Is Heartgard Chewable is good? Or the Advantage application is better? Thank you :aimeeyork |
I prefer Interceptor because it protects against heartworms and most intestinal parasites. I think HeartGuard Plus may also do this. I do not like anything else, except maybe sentinel |
Conner is on Revolution. We love it because Conner was a little lethargic the day after when he was on Heartguard and Frontline (I don't know which one was causing it). As soon as we started using Revolution, he was his normal self the day after. |
I think since your puppy is 6 months old the pup will have to be tested for heartworms before you can start any heartworm preventative... you should have started it sooner. Best of luck choosing a heartworm preventative. :) We were using the heartgard preventative on all our dogs... our Rat Terrier ( who is 7 years old) was diagnosed with heartworms last week... and he's always been on the preventative. The heartgard company is paying for his treatment. I switched him over to Iverheart Max... it takes care of tapeworms also. |
I recommend either Heartguard plus or Sentinel. I've always used Heartguard |
We also use the Revolution. It has the flea and heartworm in one dosage. We like it because it is dosed more specifically on weight. I have 2 girls on the 1-5 lbs. and 3 on the 5-10 lb. You can wash them after 24 hours too without compromising the effectiveness. I have never seen a flea on my girls...EVER! I would also recommend that you get your baby tested before starting any heartworm prevention. |
I use Heartgard Plus. Zoe tears it up like it's candy :D |
Did your vet say you need heartworm prevention in CA? |
It was my understanding that only Nor Cal had issues with heartworm Im not sure where you live in CA but I have heard that So Cal doesnt have much of a threat of heartworm |
Here is a link to a map. click on your state and heartworm and it will show you where the heartworm and other diseases are concentrated: U.S. Regional Map of Lyme disease, Canine Ehrlichiosis, Heartworm, Anaplasma If you have mosquitoes in your state, you probably have a heartworm problem. |
Hey Linda! Thanks for the map! Yep.....CA has lots of heartworm cases. The map is interesting..........it shows 54 cases of heartworm reported, yet our vet says we don't need heartworm medicine. |
Sorry......54 cases in WA State. |
i really need to get riley started on heartworm & flea now and revolution or sentinel seem good because theyre for both. he's still really small, would heartguard be too hard for him to chew? |
My vet was talking about a heatworm shot that last 6 months. Does anyone know anything about it? |
I live in San Francisco. I took him to Banfield yesterday and the vet requested me to buy the heart worm prevention for $39.99 (6 months). If I do not get it from them, I still need to get the heart worm prevention within 2 months. They only sell Advantage, so I'm thinking it would be cheaper if I purchase it online and I can pick from more varieties. |

Kalina82- thanks for the info. My vet said they had taken off the market and it was back. Since my friend Lisa's sweet Piccolo had such a bad reaction to her shots I have been very cautious. I think my vet is good and we have been with her a long time, but something about this shot made me uneasy. Don't think we'll do it. Thanks again. |
I use Revolution on Deegan. It's a great all in one preventative for heartworm, fleas, earmites, mange & ticks. One dose on the the neck and he's protected for the month. If you do decide to go with this, be sure to get the correct dosage for your pups weight. |

Do you need a prescription to get this med? |
I use interceptor because the dosage is in a range I believe to be acceptable for the little dogs (2-10 lbs)...It protects against heartworms, hookworms, whipworms and roundworms...Not that my little darling would ever be exposed to such disgusting little creatures lolol... |
