HELO PLEASE Smelly Ear???? Today I noticed Cooper's left ear smells kinda funny? Sour maybe? The right one doesn't smell. I thought maybe I got a little water in it when he had a bath but that was almost 10 days ago. Why now? I haven't seen any bugs or dirt like you see from mites unless they are so far below I cannot see them. Any Ideas ANYONE???? Please and thank you |
He could have an ear infection. Do you see any redness or gook in there, and is he itching it at all? The smell (not always) can mean an infection |
Sometimes that smell is a sign of an infection. Has he been shaking his head a lot or scratching at it? I hope not, but it wouldn't hurt to have him checked out. :( |
:) We posted at the same time. lol |
Whenever my guys ears have smelled that way, sure enough = ear infection. We always get Entederm and it treats everything (including yeast). |
If you got water in it, it is probably a yeast infection (very common). It is best to let the vet look and do a cytology to see exactly what is going on. You might try putting cotton balls in his ears when he is going to get wet. You can also use a cleaner after baths. It would probably help dry them. We use Chlorhexiderm.:) |
Thanks for the replys I still don't see any gook or anything but he does scratch at them now and then. I will have to wait till monday to take him to the vet. I will try the cotton balls from now on when I give him a bath. Those items you mentioned (medicines) are they something you could get from the pet store? or do you have to get them from the vet? |
Yep, I had a bulldog that would get an ear infection after every bath. My ex-boyfriend didn't take care not to get water in his ears. Smelly ear would definately say infection to me. Easily cleared up with ointment! Good Luck! |
you might need to use some ear wash. I use Zymox Ear Cleanser Zymox Ear Cleanser (4 oz) - this does help keeping them clean When I adopted Bubba he had chronic ear infection and even came with antibiotics - but we found the best thing ever from my holistic vet - Pavia Natural Wound Care Cream - read this and be sure to read the testimonials & case study Pavia Products For Pet and Horse Owners (866) 593-0790 |
Yeah I agree with everyone else...you should go to the vet. Same thing happened with Abbey last week. One ear smelled the other didn't. When I took her to the vet she stuck in a Q-tip and came out with a huge heap of black gunk. It was nasty. It was an infection. Most likely from water like you said. The vet gave me some ear wash. Now I always put cotton in her ears for baths and makes sure they stay dry. Then they ear wash keeps them nice and clean. Even at times when she does not have an infection it's good to use an ear wash in conjunction with baths. |
Thanks so much for all the great information. THis is the best site. Everyone is so helpful and willing to help. Thanks again. Cheryl |
