Is olive oil good for yorkies?
 
My mom's cat loves EVOO (thanks Rachel Ray) :D it started years ago when she was cooking and a little bit spilled on the floor and her cat Rambo ran over and lapped it up faster than she could clean it up. She told me I should give Zoe a little- like maybe a few drops on her food every once in a while. Has anyone ever tried it?

If Zoe is eating dog food and there is no medical reason to give it, I wouldn't.
I don't think adding extra fat to a Yorkie's diet is a good thing because of pancreatitis concerns.

That said, I'm sure some people use oil for coat effects and I give Ellie one teaspoon of either olive or canola oil everyday because her homecooked recipe calls for it. It is her source of linoleic acid but if you are feeding dog food, it isn't something you need to give.

My vet is not a fan of it and she is a huge fan of homecooking. She suggested almonds and other healthy nuts for healthy oil. Punkin LOVES almonds!!!

I would think it would be uneccessary. What health benefits would you be trying to achieve by feeding it to her? I'm sure there is another supplement/product that would achieve the same way in a more healthy manner. :)

No health benefits, per se. Her food takes care of that. The olive oil, I thought, was to give a shinier coat. I wasn't 100% sure so that's why I posed the question. Thanks :)

Gocha. I would recommend Flax oil instead. It is GREAT for their coat, skin, eyes, rich in omega 3 and recent studies show that it is beneficial in preventing cancer. It's a healthier way to achieve the same results, plus some. (BONUS: It's cheaper than Olive Oil. :thumbup:)

Awesome! :) This is why I love YT- you guys are a wealth of information. Where can I get the Flax oil?

Do you just give your babies an entire almond for them to chomp as a treat/snack?

I do. I started out giving her just a half of one just in case. She tends to gulp her food whole and I didn't want her to choke. She does just fine chewing up a whole one now. When I shake the almond tin she comes racing to the kitchen. I give her plain (no salt) roasted ones. I'm on the hunt for organic ones now.
I give her one to two a day.

You can get it at health food stores or you can order it online. (I get mine from Barleans.com) I add about 3/4 a teaspoon to their food every other day.

:confused: will this help give a shine to their coat? My Kiki's hair is thin and not shiny...

It will to an extent. I would really suggest making sure you are using a good thickening shampoo and good protien rich conditioner for that too. Also, I was told a while back by a breeder that glucosamine works wonders for coat growth (as well as promoting joint health). I started using it to grow back a coat on one of my girls almost a year ago and it has worked wonders! I would suggest maybe supplementing her diet with that as well. (I alternate the two, flax oil one night, glucosamine the next.)
