Itching for a change of food? Sunshine is 4 months old. I have a vet appt. but need some opinions. She is always itching. She doesn't have any fleas. She doesn't have any sores or bumps. I was reading in other posts it could be corn meal. I feed her Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy Food which she tolerates but isn't crazy about. She always has food in her dish but she goes crazy if someone is eating something. She begs for food and looks for falling crumbs. I was reading other threads about food and I think I'll switch to Innova dry puppy food. I know to switch slowly. She is on the thin side but not too thin. She is very healthy except for the itching. She has healthy looking stools about 3 times a day. I bathe her weekly using a puppy shampoo. I just got the Chris Christenson products yesterday and can't wait to try them out. I know there are lots of opinions, but do you think switching to the Innova will help? |
I think you are doing the right thing switching the food. My yorks don't have allergies but if they did I would switch them to a food with no corn in it. Good luck hopefully that will do it. By the way CC products are great I use them for my dogs too. |
You may be bathing her too often, she could have an allergy to the food or the shampoo. If you give her treats they could also be the cause. You should take her to the vet so he can rule out any other potential causes. Dressing your yorkie pup up, especially during summer months can also cause them to have irritated skin. I try to avoid all clothing, no matter how cute they look, during the warm months. Good luck. |
Thanks. I dress her up, take some pictures, and then the clothes come off. I agree. She doesn't need them on, they just look cute in pictures. |
I've just switched to Innova and my pups are loving it! The kibble is larger than the Nutro Ultra Puppy though so tiny dogs may have a problem with it. I'll take a photo of the kibble next to each other later tonight and post the size difference. Lisa |

Shelby went from Eukanuba to Nutro Natural Choice Puppy (lamb/rice). She was like your pup about the Eukanuba...she tolerated it. She seems to like the Nutro more. |
One of my vets raised yorkies, and when I took Sabrina to him, he immediately said "chicken allergy". Her tummy was brown mottled and she itched and itched. He said his yorkie was so bad that he'd go into shock if he got ahold of chicken. I put her on dog food with no chicken, and her skin has been good since, and the itchies only come when she gets ahold of something with chicken in it. She loves it. She'll steal from the grandkids, and if it hits the floor by accident, there is a war to get it away, but then she's got bumps and brownish whelps on her tummy for days. The vet said it was pretty common in Yorkies and they don't know why. BUT - turkey is okay. brinasmom |
Ooooh! The innova is kind of big for a small puppy. It looks like she could choke on it. Thanks for posting those comparisons. Maybe I'll try a different brand. |
My baby Jojo has the same thing. He itches his face until he starts crying. He never breaks skin or anything but usually in the mornings he shakes my bed and wakes me with his itching. I don't know what to do, I switched to Nutro recently and nothing, same itching problem... |
Gucci got the itchies due to the corn on the kibble. I bathe her with an oatmeal shampoo. She is being better now. |
Did you take your dog to the vet to make sure it's food allergies? Archie was itching his feet a lot and it turned out that there's something going around the neighborhood...a lot of dogs around here are getting kinda sick. It's hard to figure out what the allergies are from. Usually the vet will say put them on a bland diet and slowly start adding back their regular foods to try and figure out what is causing the allergies. I believe they can do an allergy test, too, but I think it's expensive (don't quote me on that). I'd check it out with a vet to make sure it's not giarda or an infection. Also, if it's not fleas, it could be mites...Archie had mites when I first got him and they dipped in this solution that smelled like gasoline. |
I gave her a bath yesterday using the Chris Christensen products for the first time. Wow! Her coat looks really great! Even this morning, without having brushed her, she still looks great. I'm sold on those products. She hasn't been itching as much either. Hmmm, maybe the hair products were partly to blame. I still want to switch food because she really doesn't like the Eukanuba. I guess I'll have to read more posts on food because the Innova looks like a choking hazard. I'm going to see the vet this week. |

Is Archie ok? Wouldn't giardia result in diareaha? |
I use CC products and like them real well also. I feed Royal Cnin mini bites. It has corn in it so it can cause itchiness I quess. My dogs don't itch though. |
