Loss of Appetite!!!!!!! Hi everyone! I am new here at yorkie talk and i just love it. Its a great source of information for new pet owners. My baby boy Prince is lossign his appetite. I took him to the vet and he said that I should try a different food but after reading all of these "food" posts, I am confused. I know that there isn't one set of food to give these little guys, but if someone had the same problem with their baby please help me. I just read about using Nutrical as a vitamin supplement and when they lose their apetite so I'll give him some. For one, I've been giving him a lot of "people food" with the hopes that he'll gain some weight and until I find a "good dog food." Eventually I'll mix them and he'll only get dog food. I give him frosted flakes as treats, is that o.k.? Could someone tell me their experiences with Nutro Natural Choice Ultra? What kind do you use? http://petco.com/product_info.asp?fa...Natural+Choice http://petco.com/product_info.asp?fa...Natural+Choice Please help I don't know if what I'm doing is right. What should I do? Thanks Dilayla. |
i would think that frosted flakes would be kinda bad because of the sugar coating....... i give my boy regular cherrios as a treat.... and what kind of people food have you fed him???? many foods are bad for dogs and it is not recomended to feed too much people food (besides the regular healthy foods such as brown rice, plaine cooked chicken, plain hamburger, ect.... He might also be on hunger strike because he is holding out for people food |
I agreed with orinskye. As long he knows he is going to get table food he will refuse the dog food. Try mixing some wet dog food with the dry kibble. You can even give him some boil rice and boil chicken. Regarding what kind of food well like you said there is just not one. Look at the ingredients and make sure the first couple are a meat or meat meal. MY Gucci is very finicky and I have changer her food a couple of times. She was on Nutro Max but make her itch. Then we try California Natural and she didnt like it. Then Natural Balance Ultra wich she ate for a month then refuse. Now im trying canidae. Good luck. |
No People Food Please don't give your baby people food. Read the post here on Pancreatitus!! |
Thanks for the advise. I have tried plain and Honeynut Cheerios, but he doesn't like them. I went with Frosted Flakes because I read here that many owners give them Frosted Flakes. He's breeder also said it's ok because yorkies love them. It's supposed to help them with hypoglycemia also because this way they'll never have low sugar. As far as people food, I do give him lots of plain cooked chicken. I just dont know what to do. |
I did read the post on pancreatis and i actually thought he had this until i took him to the vet this Monday and ran some blood tests to discover it was just loss of appetite. Maybe the weather. That's why I limit the people food. I would like to eliminate it completely, but I am scared because he won't eat his food. I have tried mixing and it didn't work. I'm very sad and worried. Thanks everyone for the quick replies. Help me, he is already underweight and I cry everytime I feel his hip bones and spine. |
i never thought about that when it came to the frosted flakes, huh, you learn knew thigns all the time on yorkietalk!!!! Cats will starve themselves till they get there way, dogs typically WILL NOT If you leave the food down he will eventually eat it (he may not be happy about it though.... lol) |
You do learn new things everyday because I didn't know that about cats. Thanks because I do intend to adopt a cat as soon as I get my own place. Don't hold me to what I stated about the frosted flakes, just something I've heard from a couple of yorkie owners. |
Natural Balance I feed my boys the Royal Canin (or ProPlan lamb and rice) with the Natural Balance roll. I take and chop the roll food very small and mix with the kibble, I also heat it for just a few seconds in the microwave. I occasionally serve it without heating, but the boys seem to like it better heated. Good luck |

Yes I've heard of these "fighting" problems. I volunteer at an animal shelter and see people return animals all the time because they either don't introduce the animals properly or because the animals just dont get along. I am going to try with an older cat at first since they don't get adopted as much as the kittens do and if that doesn't work I'll foster a kitten. lol. Whatver Mr. Prince wants |

I'm sure most of us do. These little guys end up ruling us even if we don't know it. Example: When Prince is sleeping, God forbid the person that enters my room and makes the slightest noise. I go crazy. Lol. |
Prince How old is Prince and what does he weigh? If he is a 12 week old tiny, I might indulge him a bit..but if he is passed 4 months and average size..no. Pick a quality dry food...cook a whole chicken and pick the meat off..put portions in small containers or bags and freeze. Use a couple teaspoons of ground up chicken, a few drops of water and mix it well with the dry..put it down and forget about it..he will eat within 3 days, ususally the end of the second day. Do not appear worry or concerned, do not look in the direction of the dish, do not encourage him to eat..he will eat. I have never had a Yorkie not eat and they are so small they need such a small amount of food to keep them healthy. After a week or so I would cut back on the chicken to every other day until he is weaned away from table food 100%. Is he neutered? Your attitude towards him eating is key..eat or not, it is his choice and he will get the idea...but since he is a Yorkie, he will find another way to control you..and when you solve the next problem, he still has a big bag of tricks to try...that is why I love Yorkies so much. |
Skippy wouldn't eat anything but people food when I first got him, and someone told me to stop, and put his food down, give him nutrical, and when he became hungry he'd eat. After 3 stubborn days he ate the food I put down for him. I only give him and Gwen little pieces of cheese for treats. He'll get there don't worry. |
