Why is my Yorkie's Hair Still Black? Well, I'm not going to say blue or silver, because it's totally BLACK. He is two years old (b-day Feb. 2) and he had semi-long hair that reached his wrist. When he was a puppy, his hair was very very silky, but now it's all poofy and gets matted very easily. His face and lower body (chest, legs, paws, rear-end, everything under there) are tan but he's mainly black w/ a few tan and gray strands, in which some are shedding. Is this normal??? Should I be concerned? I love my Daemar the way he is but I just wanted to know why this is and what I need to know....thanks.. Questions you might ask: Is he sexually active?--No, never any contact of that sort. Is he a Yorkie completely??-Yes, both his parents are purebreds. Do you get his hair cut?--Yes, it has been cut twice in his lifetime. What type of shampoo do you use?--I used to use baby shampoo, but a while back I start using this shampoo w/ Amino Fatty Acids that his vet gave us. Any diseases/allergies--None that we are aware of. |
That was vey thorough. Great job. I am sorry I can't answer this for you. But I will bump it up. The answers should be interesting. I learn more on here every day. Good luck with your baby. |
oh yeah, check out my avatar and the other pic on my profile (w/ the little girl taking a pic of him....sorry, i can't figure out the whole picture hosting thing!) for an idea of his coat....*Note, those are pics when I tried baby oil on him, to make his coat look better....which I'll NEVER try again.... Pics comnig soon....hopefully:rolleyes: |
His dark color may be an indication of his coat type and it may never change to the blue color given his age. If he is a soft coated yorkie, they will mat easier and it's probably best to keep him in a puppy cut. Makes grooming much easier. Also, yorkies don't shed really, but can lose a few hairs with grooming. My eyes are bad, so I couldn't tell much from the pictures, except he is adorable as is the little girl in the pic. |
Some yorkies stay black and tan...simple as that. And some take up to three years to change. My Reese is dark...he's over 1 1/2 old...and now there is slight slight color change occurring right along the bottom edges of his body. I am told his mother took a long time to change too. Reese's hair would also be described as cottony. |
Holly is 10 months, still quite black. Her underside/belly is changing to a silver color, but her back is still black as the day I got her. |

^ Agree, some never change. Bailey is 4 and still black. |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/album.php?albumid=1427 Peanut is almost 3 years and is still black . Check out my album. His is always in a puppy cut because of matting . |
My baby is almost one and all black- I personally wanted and looked for a black and gold baby and know he will not change color because of his parents and breeder :) |
thanks for all the answers!!! I just checked with his dad and he's also black & tan. |
The coat that is described as blue is very difficult to achieve, and seems to have a metalic shine to it. This is taken from Eye Shine and Coat Colors Quote:
