Mysterious Poop issue I need some advice from you all: About 3 weeks ago Ozzy started having soft mucosy stool. He was acting normal but the poop was pretty icky. I put him on a bland diet and thought maybe he drank some river water or pond water when he was swimming. The bland diet didn't seem to help. His poop remained funny colors and very mucosy and soft. (and he was gassy..phew!!) I brought a stool sample to the vet and it came back negative. The vet looked at it and thought is was bacterial and not dietary. I requested a Giardia test, that was negative. The vet gave me an antibiotic for him saying that he may have had a slight case of giardia but fought it off and now his system is creating to much flora in his gut. The meds where twice a day for 7 days and finish out the week on the bland diet. After the 3rd dose his poop looked much better. I weaned him back onto food and finished the meds Wed am. We had about 4 good days. Well his poop is getting mucosy and loose again. Lasy night he pooped at 12:30am, 2:30am and again a small little soft pile at 6am. I have called the vet to get his advice. (he has not been near the river or pond since) Now I had switched him from RC to Natural Balance (small bites chicken) and was wondering if this may be contributing to the problem. Has anyone had their baby get gassy on NB and have soft stool? I kind of regret changing him because he was doing well on RC but wanted a corn free diet for him. I'm so frustrated. Up to this point he had an iron stomach. So should I keep him on the NB and wait it out or should I wean him back to the RC when he comes off his bland diet this week. Also what do you think about feeding yogurt? What kind and how much do you all give? Maybe that will help regulate his gut flora? I'm hoping the vet has a solution. Jeesh I paid $34 for meds that didn't really work :( Any ideas? |
Is he having bully sticks or pig ears by chance? And table food such as a bone? Reggie has a sensitive tummy...any of the above causes him to have soft stools. No one at my house get any of the above anymore. Ramsey and Reese never had any issues...and they're a little  about the new no good treats rule. |
He does have a bully stick  Last episode I threw away his bully thinking it maybe had bacteria on it and I cleaned his water bowl with antibacterial soap. He has had bully sticks since he was 4 months old (he's 8 now) and never had any issues. I'm still working off the old batch that I bought. Do you think he may have developed a sensitivity to them suddenly? |
Bully sticks are very high in fat. Sometimes it takes awhile for their bodies to right themselves after a bout with diarrhea....so adding any extra fat to his diet isn't helping. I'd take the bullies away for a few days and see what happens. |
I'll take it away today. Thanks for the suggestion :) Hopefully it will help my poor little guy :( |
my baby isn't feeling well My yorkie hasn't been feeling too well the past couple days. I noticed that for about a week now he's been having a lot of gas and his stomach has been making a lot of weird noises. His poop is also slimy looking. I've been feeding him the same food as my other dog, but I've realized it probably isn't the best for him.. Do you think his stomach problems are from his food? What is the best kind of dry food to feed a yorkie? There isn't a petco or petsmart or animal food store near me.. my only option is walmart. What do you recommend? I've been feeding him that new rachael ray food.. haha.. I read the ingredients and it looked better than the rest.. but I read about it a little bit online and aparently it isn't so great. PLEASE HELP ME |
The best thing I could recommend is ordering your food online if you are not located near any other store that carries dog food. If ordering online is not an option, I would say to check every ingredient in the food from Wal-mart. Try to get a food without by-products, fillers, corn, or artificial preservatives. But your best bet would be to order online for the best brand. |
I heard back from my vet and he recommended I use the last of my antibiotic(metrodinazole), the chicken and rice food and then wean him back onto the Royal Canin food. He said if you find a food that works stick with it so I'm going back to RC. He did say it can take weeks for the system to balance out again. If after 3 or so weeks if there is still an issue we will then look into specific food allergies. I had heard that the Natural Balance can cause gas so I do think it's the food that is his issue now. Levismommy, I'd take a stool sample to the vet for a worm check to be sure then move onto a bland diet and then wean him onto a better food you order online. Royal Canin worked for me better than Natural Balance, but many folks love NB. Was there a food he was on when you got him that agreed with him that you can switch back to? Good luck I feel your pain! I hope Levi feels better soon. |
