Please recommend food for me

Our five month old is not eating his food, well unless we hand feed him. I know this has been asked many times on here, but what is the best food that won't break the bank?:D

I personally would get a bunch of samples and set them in different bowls on the floor and let your pup decide which food they like. This way you know when you purchase the food they will like it. I don't think any food will break the bank for a small dog, but the better quality food the less you have to feed. I am currently feeding Innova at the moment. I started rotating foods to let them have different protien sources. Good Luck!!

I can only speak for myself but Blaze was very picky and would not eat unless we hand fed him as well. We tried Merrick, Canidae and Innova. I finally decided to take the plunge and switch to the NV Raw medallions and he nor Autumn and Chance have turned their noses up yet. Their meals are gone almost before the plate hits the floor. I highly recommend it!

picky eater

My Bodhi wouldn't eat either unless I hand fed him. The best I could do is feed him Nutrical on a regular basis and waited for him to be hungry enough to eat on his own. I still gave in every once in a while and hand fed him. The down side: he moans and growls every time he's by the food bowl so that I can look at him as he eats. If I don't, he may not eat! My recommendation: unless the dog has an allergy condition, continue to feed the same food. They'll get hungry enough to eat eventually. If you worry about the blood sugar levels (like I was), use nutrical as a supplement. Good luck!

Toby did this for a while after I brought him home. I thought it may be due to being stressed and adjusting to his new environment. He was and is still on Eukanubas small breed puppy food. I hand fed him for a couple of days but after that I just made sure he had food always available in his bowl, that way if he's hungry and youre not giving in , he's going to have to feed himself sooner or later!! lol And he did! Now that he is eating properly, I do not leave food out and only feed him twice a day 1/2 cup as recommended by his vet for his size and breed. Hope this helps!!

discouraged

I am very discouraged reading all this. Our 9 week old Morkie, Finley, home 5 days, absolutely will not eat on her own. We have tried the food sent home by the breeder, Royal Kanin, no luck. Called the breeder, she suggested yogurt and Pedialyte, which worked for a few days. Yesterday her blood sugar crashed, ended up on IV fluids. We are now force feeding her prescription canned food, plus supplement. It is working, but she has to be fed every hour or so or her sugar levels drop again! We can't keep this up for long. She does drink water freely. All vet tests were negative, she just won't eat! Any help would really be appreciated.

You know, this case sounds very similar to my first yorkie, Honey. She went through everything that you mentioned! Hospital stay as well! She wouldnt eat anything!! So my vet put her on cat food, believe it or not!! She was only on it for about 3 months. Then I wiened her off of it by adding little bits of her puppy food. the vet said the only difference is that cat food has more protein in it which he said is great for small dogs. So if all else fails, ask your vet and see if she will prefer cat food at this time.. Mine did. lol m

When we first got Avery, we started feeding her Canidae (it's a great food-but i don't think she cared for it that much.. she wouldn't always eat it!) so we did our research (there are TONS of great foods out there.. of course alot of people home cook for their yorkies and many also feed raw!) we are still on dry kibble.. and are currently feeding her Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.. we really like it alot!! ;)

Emma was really a rescue dog and was being fed the cheapest of cheap canned food when I brought her home I bought a can of iams and Iams dry for small breed puppies, I put a little canned on the dry and let it set to moisten it (she was gumming her meals at that time) and she ate like a little pig and as soon as I was sure she could eat the dry out went the canned and she has done GREAT! no constipation, no diarrhea and no finicky puppy.

I feed Scooter Wellness. I have tried different foods in the past that didn't work for various reasons. Now, he loves his food. Scooter started on Wellness Just for Puppy but now that he is growing up, I am transitioning him to their adult food, specifically the lamb formula because he really likes the taste. When I visited family recently, their dog loved Scooters food so much that now they have switched their dog to it as well. I think you should give it a try.

It is not the cheapest but I buy the 6lb bags and they last quite a while considering Yorkies typically eat between 1/4 and 1/2 cup of food. I paid $13.25 at a local specialty pet store yesterday for a new 6lb bag. When you think about what you are getting for the price, I would pay 3 times that if I had to.

Try it, your baby may really take to it like mine did.

Neither of my girls were good eaters until we switched to Prey Model Raw. What a change! They both love meal times and eagerly wait for me to put there food down.

I use Canidae..for now..someone said the ingredients..was changing again..so my have to switch to something else!

Question about Scooter on Wellness - my pup Darwin is also on Wellness Super5 Mix, he's been on it for about 2 weeks now. I know this thread is about food, but I wanted to see if anyone has any feedback about their pups eating Wellness and their poop. Darwin's poop seems to be very inconsistent on Wellness, I feed 1/4 kibble in the AM, and whatever's left of his morning kibble with a table spoon of wet in the evening. Some days he will have good firm poop, but days like today, he had firm poop this morning, and this afternoon he had kinda soft poop, it's not diarreah, but it definitely is softer than usual. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this with Wellness? The only human food he gets is a little bite of apple, or banana, or string cheese once in a while. If the human food is the cause of his soft poop, I will definitely stop giving it to him. Any thoughts?

I know what you mean on the change in poop. It rarely happens but it does occasionally looks softer, 99.5% of the time is poop is consistant. When Scooters poop gets a little soft, if I walk away for a few minutes, say to throw the ball with him or something and then circle back to scoop it up, it always has gotten stiff. I mix a tablespoon of wet food in at night to, just to change up the taste a little. He doesn't get people food other than veggies that are recommended for blending, like green beans and carrots.

His soft poops are never runny and his coat is dramatically better since I switched. The vet says he is very healthy and has also noticed a difference in his coat (I visited with the vet because for a time I thought it was his shampoo or something that caused the skin and coat problems). With the vets approval, I am going to continue. I think it is a great brand and so long as I don't get diarreha from him or other health issues, I plan to keep him on it. The occasional soft yet non-diarreha poop could be genetic....anyone else have any ideas?
