Lepto Vaccine..... Garrett went in for his 3 round of puppy shots last Saturday. Unfortunately he was given the Lepto before I caught it :(, I was distracted by his ear mites. He never got it at his 2nd set of shots [he got the 1st set of shots before I got him]. When I got home and realised it after looking at the papers, I was beside myself.....I immediately went on YT and within 5 minutes I was a basket case. I called the vet, and she said she gave it to him as we have a high rate of Lepto here in Miami, what with the farmlands and everglades and all. She pointed out that I was in the office for about 45 after the vaccine was given while his ears were cleaned and medicated, and he showed no adverse reaction [Garrett was actually sucking up to a cute female yorkie there ]. What I want to know is, has any YTers experienced any delayed or long term after effects of the Lepto vaccine? It's been a week and he's doing fine, eating, sleeping and playing like normal. He was extra sleepy right after the vet visit, but pepped up in the afternoon. Do I need to be worried? |
Hes fine then. If there was going to be a reaction it would be right away. Mine also get the lepto and have never had any problems |
So should he get it again at his 4th and final set of puppy shots? or no... |
Its up to you. Alot of people so no but My vet is insistant they get it as there are cases of lepto here. Lepto can be deadly if they get it |
If lepto is a problem in your area I would worry and I think I would get it. ALTHOUGH I would make sure that I was able to stay in the office up to an hour after in case something goes wrong. Also, keep an eye on the pup for the night just in case...of course I am a HUGE worrier. LOL We have never given Lepto, but our area doesn't have it really bad. |
The thing that bothers me the most about vaccines is that the vet does not inform you ! This pissess me off. They should be teeling the owner what is going on before administrating anything. I am glad your baby is doing ok from the Lepto. I just wish they told you first ! :aimeeyork |
If there is a problem with lepto in your area, he probably needs the vaccine. However, it should never be given along with his other shots due to the risk of a reaction. It should be given separately at least 2-3 after the other vaccines. Fort Dodge makes a single dose vaccine. You can buy it yourself from Revival for a few dollars if your vet doesn't have it. Dogs usually don't have a reaction to lepto the first time they get the shot. It's usually the second or even third shot that can cause the deadly reaction, so just because he didn't have a reaction this time, doesn't mean he won't next time. IMO your vet should have discussed giving him the lepto vaccine before he did it. |
My four and any puppies that we have, have always gotten the Lepto. We have cases of it quite a bit here where I live. Our doggies have never had any kind of reaction to it. |
Lexi just had her 4th set of shots today and she had the lepto component in all of her shot sets except the first one which was given by the breeder. She has never had a bad reaction. About 2 hours after we get home from the vet her injection site gets sore and she isnt as playful as usual, but after some infants benadryl or baby asprin she perks up a little. However the next morning she is completely fine! Just keep an eye on him and he should be fine! :) |
