How long does kennel cough last?? Roxy (yeah, we did after all change it..lol  ) has had this thing for 2 weeks I think and she's still coughing. She is on antibiotics and cough meds, its only when I skip a dose of the cough meds (b/c shes doing ok) that she starts hacking again. Is this normal? Should I just wait it out? TIA :) |
Don't worry, when we first had Annie it lasted for a month. It will work itself out. Check with your vet for how long to keep her on the meds. We had given her antibiotics for about 2 weeks. |
yes it can last anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months..... i think toby had his kennel cough for about two and a half weeks, so we were lucky..... but the vet didnt perscribe anything for it.... he just said let it run its course...... |
the meds are a cough supressant SP? thats why she dont cough when shes on them |
ok this may sound stupid........ but if she is on cough suppresants to make her stop, and she doesnt cough because of them...... how in the hell are you supposed to know if it is gone or not???? the coughing may have been bad at times.... but i put toby on children tylenol cough and cold medicine ...... it didnt stop the coughing all together, but it stopped it enough so that it wasnt violent, he coughed up mucous once or twice and then the kennel cough was gone shortly after, it seems if you use a strong cough suppresant the mucous will just sit there and not get any better...... I dunno the specifics, but im just saying, ..... im glad toby didnt go on those heavy meds |
the meds that the doctor give you is supposed to break up the flem |
ohhhhhhh ok, thanks...... i was a little worried about that, my baby didnt take any meds for his ... his vet takes a more "hands off" approach, Some people may find this approach "mean" or cruel" to have them "suffer" but i really prefer it this way, the less medication the better, and i always love a vet who isnt trying to sell you on teh latest 'whatever', ya know? Of course there are times when they NEED to be medicated, but i love a vet that really looks at the situation and puts thought into the expected outcome and comfort (and safety) of an animal instead of giving medicine for the hell of it.... (can you tell i like my vet???) |
