Changing to RAW. Questions? I decided to change Nolee to RAW feeding. This morning is his first and does not seem to be going well. I put a chicken thigh in his bowl. He is looking at me like I am crazy and pushing the bowl around with his nose. I put a piece of plastic under the bowl and area and he is now covering the bowl with the plastic and not eating. Is this normal when switching?? Any suggestions?? Could use your help. Thanks! |
Hi Deanna, It's your GE Buddy Brooke!! We are on raw too!! We use Nature's Variety and prey model raw like you are trying to do. The first time I ever tried bone-in chicken with them I kind of had to help them and show them how to eat it! For right now you should take the skin off the chicken, it is hard for them to chew when they are starting and is too high in fat at the beginning and will give them diarrhea. Then I rip a bite sized piece of the chicken off the bone and feed it to them, I did this about 2 or 3 times and then I just ripped some of the chicken so it gave them something to start chewing on and I put the piece next to them. My one big Yorkie Booboo caught on right away and I heard him crunching on bone and digging into it. Bitsy my 3 lb. chihuahua turned into a lion and was trying to steal everyone elses meat!! It just takes a bit of time and then he should get the hang of it. Depending on what you have been feeding Nolee he will have some adjustment time in detoxing also. This means that he could have loose stools for quite a few days. My little chis and Brooke only had loose stools for about 4 days but my 2 older yorkies it was like 12 days!!! Believe me it was no fun but I asked my holistic vet and she said that it is common because their bodies are detoxing all the grain and other things they don't need and are learning to process the enzymes and protein in the raw meat. My dogs have been on raw since March and I notice that their coats are better, they are calmer around food, my little one has built muscle mass instead of being scrawny and their breath and teeth look better. Plus they love to eat!! They get excited when I bring out the meat!! Also, I don't feed mine the bone-in meat in a bowl. I put a vinyl table cloth on the kitchen floor (since I have tile) and I make them eat on the cloth. Then I use a huggie wipe on their face and paws when they are done eating. And I wash down the table cloth with a few antiseptic wipes and put it away until the next meal. Hope this helps and pm me anytime if you have more questions. There was also a good thread going on her about prey model feeding with some very knowledgeable people, I will try and find it for you. |

I am a raw feeder too. I reccomend adding some tripe to the diet as it is an instinctual appetite stimulator. I like Tripett brand - canned. Be forewarned, its stinks to high heaven!! But it really helps get the prey model eaters going. Good luck! Yummy Tripe | CupOFdog | Dog Site for Dog People Shiny Happy Coats, Eyes, & Tummies Too! | CupOFdog | Dog Site for Dog People |

Anytime!!! :d:d:d:d |
Hello..another raw feeder for 7 years. Start small, a bit of hamburger or premade, something he doesn't have to chew..not so intimidating, right now h thinks the chicken is bigger than heis. Then work up to it. My nine year old can't do Rmb's because of bad teeth, but he still tries, carrying them around and keeping everyone else away. If yours does eat them eventually, great! If not, ground is still Waay better than kibble, even the good stuff. You also might slightly cook something small, then cook less and less until it's no longer cooked. It's possible he doesn't even recognize it as food, or does and might not know how to eat it, hence burying it until he figures out what it is. Don't forcefast him, Yorkies can drop blood sugar if they go without food too long. You can also mix some canned in with some raw, but I wouldn't start with bonein food, I think it's just too much for your fuzz rght now. |
He is loving his ground beef. I agree, it has to be better than kibble. I added a little liver and he ate it with no problem. I will stick with this for now and add a little bone eventually. I did chop up a little chuck steak and it took him a minute to start eating this, I guess b/c it was not ground. Is the bone in chuck steak too hard to give to him? Thanks for all of ya'll help and support. (Even my husband is kinda getting into feeding him raw. He is trying to make suggestions. This is a good sign):animal36 |
Right now it might be too much for him, try something Teeeny, like a fragment of chop or steak with just a little bone in it. I've even started mine on grizzle with a chip of bone from a porkchop or something like that. Make sure the chunks are teeny right now, too. Even if he never transitions to whole food, you are still on the right track. Another trick I use is to offer a marrow bone, with something yummy stuck in it, like pb or freezedried live, to get him gnawing. Right now he might not know he can eat bone. Try a small chicken wing, play tug of war, "yes mom it's okay to play with your food in this case" to get him interested. If he chews on toys while playing, throw it, he might grab it and chaunk down and get the idea. Make it Fun!! My terrier mx is still intimidated by whole food, so I have to play with him and get him interested, then he usually devours it, just getting him started can be a little slow. Do you have any other fuzzes on raw? Sometimes they copy each other. Imagine a Lab Not knowing she could eat a bone/ It took the Yorkie to teach her1 From a distance, of course, he doesn't share well. |
Update on Nolee Nolee has no problem with his ground beef. I added liver and he loves it! Still not eating bone. I have tried chicken bone (he doesn't like chicken), pork bone and recently soup bone with marrow. He would just carry it around and then try to hide it. I will try playing with the bone and see if this helps. I tried chuck steak and he will eat it if it's cut up. He still does not want to chew large pieces. He will leave the large pieces. I tried cutting up some of the meat on the soup bone, but he will not eat it?? What's up with that? Well I am thankful for now that he is eating his ground meat and liver. I hope he is getting enough nutrients from this! Thank you all again for your help!:animal36 |

Does bone chop up easy?? I'm afraid to have too small of a bone in his meat. I have tried with a meaty bone and he still will not. I tried playing, it doesn't help. I even covered a bone with cheese (his favorite) and he still did not try to chew. I will continue. Thanks again! |
When I started Milo on Raw I offered cut up boneless chicken and cut up some small wingettes into pieces. It took him all of two days to enjoy the bone crunching and now will attack a whole chicken leg. I had to do that with one of my cats too----he's just now taken to the bones, after about 6 weeks. |
