Ear Hair?? Last week I took my new baby to the vet (1st time yorkie owner) and the vet said that I would need to pluck the hair out of her ears?? I have never heard this before..how often do you pluck it, with what, and why? He did it with his fingers in one ear to show me what he ment and she squealed and cried :( any advice or suggestions?? |
Yes, the hair in the ears has to be removed. You can use your fingers, or a tweezer. There is a powder that can be used to help grip the hair, but I can do my guys without it. They don't make a peep, so I know I'm not hurting them. If it's left in there, it makes them itchy, and they scratch it, and the scratching can lead to other problems. |
Some people pluck it and some people don't. I don't but if Ellie's vet thought it was causing a problem, I would. If you trust your vet, go with his advice on it.:) Sometimes leaving it doesn't cause problems and sometimes it might... |
When I took Abbey to the groomer, she did it. I would really love to be able to groom Abbey myself but she is much too wiggly! The groomer even has a hard time with her because she is terrified of the clippers. She has to groom her with scissors. Hopefully, she will grow out of that. Has anyone else had this problem with their yorkie? |
Grooming I've never tried to do Max's ears. I'm hoping his next groomer will pluck them. He was groomed three weeks ago for the first time and his ears weren't done, although she said they would be. I'm very suspicious about the groomer, who said he stood still and let her brush his teeth. Cut his nails and scissor cut his hair. Even my vet had a terrible time doing his nails, and I can't get near him with a toothbrush. What I suspect is, that he was sedated. I've never used a groomer before, so didn't really have any idea about the length of time Max would be. I took him into the groomer at 11.30 am and was told to pick him up at 5pm. She saw the puzzled look on my face and changed it to 4pm. Does anyone here think he was sedated? |
I was wondering if some groomers use a muzzle on them? Who would know? I sure would hate to think so! I just can't imagine being able to do all those things, like bathing, cutting her toenails, pulling the hair out of their ears and scissor cutting Abbey without a struggle. |
The hair in the ear can cause an ear infection if it is not plucked out. The ear wax can accumulate more quickly around the hair because it is harder to keep clean than when it is hairless. If it is not kept clean it can cause an infection and smell. It seems each dog has a different rate on how quickly they form the wax, and how much hair they grow in the ear. I use tweezers and then clean with an ear cleaner and a pad and qtip(but not very far in). They smell so much better too. |
