Sentinel or Interceptor? Which do you use or prefer? I've never had any fleas but do I need to prevent them anyway? Also what dosage do you use(I know I'd need the under 10 pound ones) how often do you give them...every month or during the summer months? |
I use heartworm preventative 7-8 months of the year. These are both okay and the Program in the Sentinel is good but it is more expensive and not necessary if your pup doesn't have flea issues. Either way is fine. If Ellie was on it (she used to be), I'd use the 2-10 pound dosage. |
I prefer Interceptor. It takes care of any worms or parasites. Fleas should be addressed separately in my opinion - however I do not use any chemical flea preventatives as this is essentially applying pesticides to the dog's skin. The best preventative for all parasites is a healthy diet and strong immune system! |
Pepper gets the interceptor as well. And he will probably take it year round because of where we live. |
I have 3 yorkies. Interceptor is for heartworms. It is given monthly in a tiny pill which the dog swallows. For fleas I am currently using 3 different things. One dog is on Frontline Plus, one on Sentinel and one on Comfortis. The Frontline Plus is put on the neck once a month. The Sentinel is a pill which is swallowed and the Comfortis is a chewable, beef-flavored tablet. I really want to get all the girls on the same medicine soon. I just don't know if Sentinel or Comfortis is better. |

Actually, Interceptor and I think Sentinel is five times stronger than it needs to be so the company can claim that it kills intestinal parasites. |

I use sentinal. I hate giving 2 different things. With Sentinal its one pill for both once a month. It does not KILL fleas tho. It keeps them from reproducing. Your dog still get bit :( But if you do not have a flea issue.....this product is mild and great! Mine have reacted to frontline and revolution both. Im not a huge fan of topical chemicals. I actually give closer to every 45 days :) and I dont give at all in winter. (Michigan eh...) |
Sentinal or Interceptor? The vet put Gracie on Sentinel when she was a very tiny pup and she's done fine on it ever since. We live in a very swampy area in NoVa so she takes it year-round. I order it online and it's much cheaper than getting it from the vet. |
My vet recommends the interceptor for the small ones. So lulu got it and now zoey gets it. I give it in the summer months. Then I give her a tab of brewers yeast with garlic and I bathe her with the minksheen. I do my best to avoid meds as much as can be. |
I give all my babies Sentinel. But during the summer months I also put Advantage on them. I hate using topical treatments and tried some natural products but I was still seeing fleas and my Kylie is allergic. So I had to go back to the Advantage, the fleas here are horrible!! |
I am using Interceptor with AImer now, and I will try to explain why...I tried "Googling" but couldn't find anything definite. My Vet explained that the lufenuron actually sterilizes the fleas, but it can't do this until the nasty creatures bite your doggie. She told me that this isn't a problem with most dogs, but if you have allergies to flea bites, it can be a big problem. She recommended that we stick with Interceptor and a flea preventative. That way the fleas don't have to bite to be prevented. I hope I'm explaining that correctly, someone might have something to add. :) |

That is why some people who use program use other preventatives also (like Advantage)...:) It is definately not a preventative but it is very useful (like methoprene in Frontline Plus that stops fleas from passing their genes on, so they can't become resistant to the drug from my understanding). |
I live in Florida and it is warm like 9 months a year. I've only had Harls for about 4 months, but she is (and will be) on Sentinel year round. Sentinel prevents worms and keeps fleas from reproducing. I was considering K9 Advantix because of mosquitos and ticks, but my vet said the mosquito preventive really only works about the first 72 hours after application. I currently do not use any topical cream. However, I give her a bath once a week and use Dawn before using her regular oatmeal shampoo to kill any fleas if they are alive. I would prefer to not ever use a topical, and I am waiting for Comfortis to get some history behind and I might use that. My girl is under 3 lbs and I worry about it all being too much medicine. |

which I spritz on before walks. It deters pests and in my experience, works great. I keep my dogs on heartworm preventative year round and nothing else. I haven't had much of a problem with fleas, we found one or two, put them straight into the bath and that was the end and I have only found 2 ticks on my bigger dog, one embedded on his ear and we promptly removed it and the other I found before he embedded, so we washed him down the drain. Flea combing your dogs after each walk is a great way to see if they picked up anything and if you find a critter, put them straight into the bath. I can't emphasize this enough: A strong immune system is the best deterrent for pests. A natural, healthy diet, limited immunizations, vitamins and holistic care deters parasites more then any chemical can. Parasites look for vulnerable hosts to make their home - its nature. Chemical pesticides weaken the immune system. Do what's best for you and your pet, but look into alternative methods! |
I think it depends on where you live. When we had the pups in KS we just used interceptor because we didn't have a big flea problem. But now that we are in TX where it is hot and humid most of the time, we have more of an issue with fleas. More than anything, Sentinel isn't a solution for if you already have a flea infestation, but more of a preventative of infestations in your home. We give Sentinel year round, but I know that some areas are ok to not even give interceptor all year round. I saw a US map in my vet's office that showed where heartworm is an issue, and I'm sure your vet is familiar enough with your area to know if a year round heartworm prevention is necessary. Really, it just depends on if you live in an area where fleas are an issue, if you want to have the monthly prevenative or just the hearworm medicine. |
