Chronic soft stool My Oliver is 2 and half years old. He has formed but soft stool. I took him to the vet and had him tested for varies parasites, but they came back negative. The vet diagnosed him as having IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), but Oliver is not a hyper or overly anxious dog. He seems fine otherwise. The vet prescribed a food by IAMS intestinal low residue formula, but I don't like the ingredients and don't want him to stay on it. I've always fed him holistic eagle pack, or wee bits by Solid Gold. Does anyone else have this problem with their dog or any good ideas that could help him get more solid? |
does he only eat kibble? maybe it's treats causing soft stool. romeo eats grass when i'm not looking and it makes his stool soft. |
Have you tried giving canned pumpkin? |
Yes, I have a lot of ideas and experience as well. IBS is often a deductive diagnosis that can be "cured" bc it's often just an umbrella diagnosis anyway (meaning, they can't really find a true cause). What do you want to do in terms of diet - are you firm about sticking w/ kibble or are you willing to homecook and/or try raw? Also, what have you tried in terms of supplementation so far? WELCOME TO YT! :D |
chronic loose stool I am willing to make my dog homemade meals, but I'm not sure what kind of nutrients he needs. I don't know about the raw diet, though I've heard people refer to it before. I did read about pumpkin, but where do you get just pumpkin without the added ingredients for pie. I'm willing to do what I need to in order to help my little Oliver get better. He's also gotten pretty picky about not eating his kibble without a bit of yogurt or cottage cheese, which the vet said will keep him better in check. |
Okay, here's what I'd suggest since you seem open to it. I'd suggest you buy some Natures Variety Freeze Dried Raw Venison Medallions - and leave them dry. I don't know where you are in Indiana or I would've tried the store locator for you - but they do have a store locator on their site. I think you should also buy some digestive enzymes, like ProZyme, and a probiotic of some kind (probiotics are like the live cultures found in yogurt) - probios are great for healing the digestive tract. Did he ever have an odd infection when he was a puppy or anything, btw? Anyway, take about a 1/4 medallion and crumble over his kibble - feed that for about 5 days and see how he does. Give the Prozyme each meal. Usually you give a half capsule of the probio once a day. If all is well, you could increase to 1/2 medallion for 5 days, then 1 medallion (decreasing some kibble each time) until you reach giving medallions only. There is a feeding guide on the NV website so you can see how many medallions you should be feeding based on his weight/activity. After a month or two, you'll want to try the Raw Frozen Venison Medallions (not freeze dried), which you'd let defrost and then give (without cooking). That would be the ultimate goal. :) That's what my guys eat and many others feed here as well. My Marcel (my avatar) had 4 mths of mushy/mucousy/jelly/bloody poo - and no one could fix it. I spent hundreds at the vet, we tried meds, everything! Finally, an animal nutritionist helped me - I cooked for him for about a month (he was firm after 1.5 days), then we went on NV - and he's been healthy since. :D |
Thank you so much for your replies and suggestions. I will definitely try the Natures Variety Medallions. Oliver never had any worms or parasites, but he did have pneumonia at 10 weeks old, but his stool was normal then. Have you ever heard of Flint River Ranch homemade baked foods? Even though he acts normal, I know he's not healthy on the inside as long as his stool is not normal. I'll try anything that's more natural then the poision his vet prescribed for him. I feel sick everytime I have to feed it to him. I'll keep you posted! Thanks again!!!! |
fix to eat when molly gets that way i boil skinless and bonelecc chicken breast and then cook rice add together. that helps with digestion, almost all yorkies suffer from bowel trouble but they will out grow it. |

It is the same in human medicine. If they can't find anything wrong it must be IBS. |
Natures I feed this too to some of mine. I have nice firm stools on it. Also, a vet bought a pup from me recently and has his pup on Royal Canin for sensitive stomachs, he says the pup is doing great on it - its RX. He put the pup on it because he has another dog with IBS and wants them to eat the same diet. |
