Is bug spray "OFF" ok to spray on pup? We are up in northern michigan for the week, and poor Darwin is being eaten alive by mosquitos!! I sprayed some human OFF on him to try to ward them off, but now I'm really worried it'll make him sick! He hasn't licked the bug spray, and I sprayed it 4 or 5 hrs ago, so it's totally dried. Is it bad to use this on the pups? Help! I can bathe him tomorrow first thing if need be, we're also going to be in the lake, so even if I don't bathe him, I'm pretty sure it'll wash off... |
I definitely would wash that off of him. I don't know for sure but to me, if it's something YOU wouldn't lick yourself, don't put it on your dog because he will certainly be licking it. Does it say "harmful if swallowed" on the label??? They do make bug spray for dogs, though I don't know how good it is either. But we used to use it on our labradors and it didn't bother them. |
I'd be cautious with it. My neighbor's dog recently got a rash and that's the only thing she can think of that could have caused it. She's not sure but, she can't think of anything else she did differently to cause it. If you use it, just watch you pup carefully. If you see anything different about him or a rash forming, wash it off immediately. You could always call you vet. Also, try googling it and see if there's a natural oil that repels mosquitoes. Try not spraying it where you know he can get to it. Maybe just a little bit by his shoulder blades would be enough, like where you'd apply your Frontline. Good luck! |
I actually use spary that we use on horses. It is safe for animals and non-toxic. It works too!:) |
I would say absolutely not, especially with risk of them licking. And, this stuff does get absorbed into your skin (human or animal) - which is why I also don't use it on humans. There are non-toxic sprays made for dogs by places such as Happy Tails and many shampoos have essential oils that act as insect repellent as well. |
We make our own with essential oils and water. Some oils to use: lemongrass, citronella (duh:)), peppermint. Just google "essential oils as flea control" or "essential oils in bug repellant" . Well, you get the idea |
i would give him a bath asap and becareful that off doesn't run into his eyes. i use cain and able for mosquitos. https://secure.cainandablecollection...ts.asp?ID=1001 |

I live in an area with LOTS of mosquitos, and when I took Peanut in for his neutering, the vet suggested VectraD flea and tick control. It also repels mosquitos, which allows me to use less products in trying to care for the lil guy. His scratchin has greatly reduced and he LOVES being outside now whereas before he was begging to come in after only a few minutes. |
Seargent's has an all natural flea/tick spray that uses all kinds of oils. (cinnamon, peppermint etc) You can get it at Target. |
VectraD flea and tick does anyone know where I can buy this VectraD, or even read about it? I hear a couple people talk about it, but I can't find out any info on it. Thanks!:animal36:animal-pa |
