Recommended Food Hello, I have a 14 week old yorkie pup. When I got him he was being fed Pedigree hard food. When we brought him home I noticed he didnt want to eat at all. When he did eat he seemed miserable chewing the kibbles. Anyway, I started him on the can of Pedigree soft food (for Adults) the breeder gave me. After taking him to the vet and confirming he was underweight the recommended switching his food to a puppy soft. With my other yorkie I fed him a Iams/Nutro mix. That was the vets idea. So I bought Nutro for my new baby. I decided to look online and found an article that in the last couple months there have been numerous illnesses and 6 deaths related to the Nutro food. It hasnt been confirmed, but the evidence seems rather obvious. My question is: What is a safe food to feed my puppy? Is Eukaneuba a good food? |

You can usually go on each website and find a store near you. When you change ... expect some diarrhea... to put it bluntly your dogs have been eating "crap" (sorry.. it's like us eating McDonalds every day) so when you introduce a high quality food their body is going to go through a cleansing. Also after being on this food for a bit they will poop MUCH less. Beacuse all the ingredients are high quality their body uses more of it and has less to poop out. |
NNNoooooooo Canidae, Merrick, Fromm [kibble or wet] etc Look at the sticky under Health & Diet for great recommendations  |
I checked that thread out and the local PetSmart doesnt carry any of the 4 star and up brands. |

I LOVE Wellness! Petco is supposed to be carrying it soon - do you have one of those near you? Petco also carries Solid Gold, Natural Balance, and some other great holistic foods. |
We use Natural Balance and can usually find it at the smaller, privately owned pet stores as opposed to the chain stores. Glad you found out about the problems with Nutro....and good luck on the switching. |
Our dogs eat mostly Evo but I supplement that with some stuff I cook for them. It isn't sold in any of the stores around here, so I have mine shipped. It's kind of expensive but lasts forever because Yorkies don't eat all that much compared with other dogs. It's a very high-protein food, and our dogs have done very well on it. They always have lots of energy (sometimes too much), and wonderful shiny coats. |

We buy our Canidae at Pet Supplies Plus. They also sell Merrick's, Solid Gold, and many other top quality brands.. |
I am finding with research, Pet Supplies Plus seems to carry most of the good brands. I think I'll drive the extra couple miles and go there for my food needs. |

Just so you'll know the potential cons of Evo, the only three I've consistently seen is that it can cause gas, it has a strong odor, and it's too expensive. I have four dogs on it, and I haven't seen the problem with gas. I never understood the complaints about the food having a strong odor. I can't even smell it unless I stick my nose right in the bowl (which I did only because I saw complaints of a strong odor, not because it's something I'm in the habit of doing). I had already mentioned the part about it being expensive, and I guess if you were feeding a Great Dane that could be a problem. However, since Yorkies typically just nibble off and on and eat so little overall, I've never found the cost to be an issue. Best wishes, Jade |
I feed Maximum Nutrician it IS sold a walmart and my babies do great on it. They eat a lot less. Poop a lot less and mantain great weight. I do agree a lot of walmarts food is crap but....I have tried several foods and this is what I have found to be a decent food! I guess now all the flaming will start! |
