Food Debate My husband and I have been debating over the best way to feed our puppy. What do you think would be the best thing having a food bowl out with a small amount of food for her to eat on all day or just putting a handful of food in her bowl in the morning and at night? (she is 10 weeks old and 1.5 pounds) We will let yall decide who wins the bet ;) |
At her age and weight, I'd want her to be eating every 3-4 hours - so for now, I'd free feed no matter what (unless you're there and can ensure she's eating). I would keep a very close eye on her weight - maybe even have canned on hand (which is better anyway) to give in a.m. and p.m. just to be sure she is eating enough at this age/weight, which is very vulnerable. I don't feed kibble anymore - but when I did, I ALWAYS free-fed and my pets always self-regulated their food, it was great. Never overweight either bc they never overate, knowing the food was always there. :) |
I have always free fed all my dogs. Never any problems with overeating or food aggression. I recommend it for smaller dogs especially. |
I free feed all my dogs. In addition, with the young pups I generally have a "hand feeding" session in the evening. That way I know that they all get a big belly full so they will sleep all night. What I have found is that when I go to the bowl and sit down, they start eating and don't wait for me to hand them kibble. It doesnt' take long before they get the idea and all I have to do is go and stand by the bowl and eventually they just fill up in the evenings on their own. |
I brought homw my Suzi when she was 9 weeks old. She was 3lbs back then .I have free fed her from day one. the thing that your going to have to be extra cautious about is low blood sugar. If your tiny little one is not eating regularly it is very dangerous. :aimeeyork Please very very cautious about this, and make sure she is eating and drinking well. :aimeeyork |
I believe puppies should be free-fed if you do kibble, but you have to be certain that your puppy is eating every few hours so that he/she does not have a hypoglycemic episode. Wylie's mom gave great advice about leaving kibble out all day and possibly giving a little canned in the morning and a little canned at night. Canned food is less processed and higher in moisture, so it's better than dry in my opinion. |
I've always free fed Lil Miss Maggy May every since we got her. I asked our vet if this was ok and he said yes, as long as she isn't gorging and over eating and gaining to much weight then it's fine. She does wonderful like this. |
Between feeding twice a day or free feeding, definately free feed. Who wins?:) I was also add canned food to a pup's diet though and/or make sure the pup is eating every couple hours. |
Given her young age, I would definately suggest feeding her several times a day. In addition, as already mentioned, carefully monitor her food intake and weight to make sure she is eating enough. Once she is older, you may want to exmine what will best fit her needs at that point. I used to free feed my girl when she was a loner and she did fine with that. (Of course, when she ceased being the only dog in the house, she became a greedy little piggy making herself sick trying to eat ALL the food so that had to stop.) |
I free feed also. All 9 |
