Lyme Vaccines and Flea Preventative
 
I need advice... Jamie has his 6 month checkup this Saturday and the receptionist said something about a Lyme Vaccine. I told her I definitely want to speak with the vet before they give him the shot because I'm not sure I want to give it. She said that the would have him call me to discuss it. Anyway now I'm torn. I really don't want to give Jamie any unnecessary vaccines but we do live in Mississippi so we do get ticks (at least thats what my uncle said). I've never personally seen one. Of course I don't know if they carry Lyme. So I need opinions... should I give the Lyme vaccine and why or why not?

Also do you treat with flea and tick preventative? If so which do you use. When I bathed Jamie on Saturday in Buddy Wash I found 1 flea. We just moved so we are in a new yard. Should I treat him or should I get something to treat the yard? If i treat the yard what should I use.

I chose not to do the Lyme Vaccine. I don't think it has a high enough effective rate and it is a vaccine that has a high reactive rate to it. We have A LOT of ticks here so I chose to use Advantix on Ozzy as a preventive. He is under 4 lbs so I only use half of the tube. I know some dogs don't react well to the topical oils but so far he has done really well. The deer bring the ticks into our yard so we really can't treat for them. I'm not sure about the whole flea question perhaps some one else can help out there.If you search I think there is a thread about more natural remedies too. Good luck!

Thanks for your response! Thankfully I have a fenced yard so no deer. I would definitely rather treat the yard than treat Jamie if possible. Like your baby Jamie is small. I remember that when I first signed up on YT before I got him there was a thread about flea preventative building up in their system and making them sick. I just wanna do whats best for my baby. Ahhh the woes of being a Yorkie mom... :rolleyes:

I would listen to veterinary schools before I would a vet practicing on his/her own and the general consensus is tat this vaccine should rarely be used. Where and on what animals it should be used on, I don't know.

I do not give the Lymes Vax to my guys. Most vets will try to talk you into it (stress most). So, personally - I wouldn't rely on your vet too much to help you in your decision - in my opinion. I would look at incidence and prevalence of lymes disease in your area - and base your decision on that. Also, what are others in your area doing? Hopefully some other YT'ers who live in your area will chime in too. :)

Thanks Ann. LOL! I think I may be the only ACTIVE YT member from Mississippi. There are a couple of others but they only post once in a blue moon. Add that to the fact that most of the Mississippi pet owners I know are kinda backwards (either don't vaccinate at all or just go with whatever the vet tells them) anyway and that doesn't leave me with alot of resources. Do you know of any way to find out how prevalent Lyme is in an area? I don't mind making some calls and doing a little research but I just don't have a clue where to look.

Roll your mouse over your state - and it gives you super detailed stats - your state really doesn't look bad at all, relatively speaking. :)

I should clarify that these results appear to me to be BOTH incidence and prevalence, btw (except for the anaplasma). :)

Ok so if I'm reading that map right its showing 12 reported cases of Lyme in the WHOLE state of MS since 2001? Why in the name of all that's good and sacred does that silly doctor think I'm gonna let him give Jamie a vaccine that has a more likely chance of MAKING him sick?!?!?! And from what I just read on that site a tick has to be on him form 24-48 hours to give him Lyme. Since I throughly comb Jamie twice a day, I just don't see that happening.

LOL, some vets like to give Lyme's and others think it is a good idea to give lepto even in a state where the chances of getting it are about 2 in a million.:rolleyes:

LOL, you're welcome!!! Isn't that map awesome?! I don't use any protection for my guys in AZ, honestly - and we haven't had a problem. We travel to Minnesota every July and I worry every time - and I consider a flea/tick collar for the visit (but everyone talks me out of it here), but we've been okay thus far. Still, I wonder if I should use a collar for the 10 days we're there, ugh.

We do love us our Crystal - she's one of our food/health gurus, that's for darn sure!

I feel kinda guilty like I'm leading ya'll to believe that my vet is the evil minion of Satan. I haven't even really talked to him about it yet... just the receptionist. He really is a great guy. Before I could tell him no Lepto, he explained why he WASN'T going to give it to Jamie. And before I asked him to, he split Jamie's puppy shots into several visits with a week between each visit. So he really is a great guy and I do trust him alot, just not with everything. For example, he recommended Science Diet food when I first got Jamie, but was open to the fact that I decided to feed NV Raw. Everytime I want to go in as informed as I can be so that I can explain my decisions to him. I know he's required to give me the "company line" but he's really great about all my opposing decisions.

We have a lot of ticks in our area. Lymes disease is an issue here. We live in the woods and get ticks on us sometimes. I opted for the Lymes vaccine....because of where we live...Penny did have a tick on her before. Prob. came from us. But I would go with what Wylie"s mom said...JMO...;)

My boy's have alway's gotten it But since Brownie has gotten it His allergies have gotten worse so we are going to skip it when we go I don't wanna take any chances.
