Flea Prevention in the lawn. What is the best product or solution to keeping fleas out of the lawn? I prefer something natural , but am willing to use other stuff if needed. |

I've tried the Adam's yard spray, not very good. Then I tried PesTabs, not good either. I just put down some Bayer Complete Insect Killer and seem to be getting good results. You apply it with a spreader and water it in. It's supposed to be effective for up to 3 months. It's the best I've used so far and is fairly cheap. The bag I got covers 10,000 sq.ft. and cost less than $20. I got it at Lowe's. |
Mow and water your lawn regularly. Short grass allows sunlight to penetrate and warm the soil, which kills larvae. Watering drowns the developing fleas. Encourage ants. Perhaps I should say "do not discourage ants." They love to eat flea eggs and larvae. This is another reason not to use pesticides that kill all the insects in your yard. Apply agricultural lime on grassy or moist areas. This helps to dry out the fleas. Rake up any dead leaves and grassy debris first. |
Yorkiedaze, I like your suggestions. They may well work for the OP. I live in Coastal Mississippi and have had to (reluctantly) go with the strong stuff. I've had to deal with an outbreak of fleas, courtesy of my neighbors. Here, we have very sandy soil, which fleas love. Also, I can't let the ants do their thing as we have fire ants here. I've never heard of using lime before and may try that once I have my situation under control. |
Diatomaceous Earth - it's a natural product you can use on your yard, your pet and even you. You can use it sparingly in your home and vacuum it up to help get rid of fleas indoors. Do a google on it - there are lots of places that sell it but shipping can be a little high due to it's weight. Maybe you have somewhere around you to buy it? |

I am in south Texas where fleas and misquitos are really bad most of the year. I spray my yard and trees once a month with misquito-B-gone by ortho. If you read the label it says it is for other insects too. fleas being one of them. we do not have a problem with fleas in the yard or for that matter misquitos either. (well not as much as the people across the street from us do.) and that is a fact! the directions tell you that it is safe for humans and pets after it dries. I usually warn all the pet owners in the neighborhood when I will be spraying so they can keep their pets and kids out of my yard. hope this helps. |

There's a certain Nematode that also attacks and kills flea larvae and eggs. I know some online garden supply companies sell them, not sure if you would be able to find them locally or not. Google for "flea control nematode" |

this is a good thread! :thumbup: I had a flea problem in [brought in:rolleyes:] my house recently and boy, was it a pain! I had hubby spray the entire lawn with some "really powerful" treatment...and didnt let Daisy out for a while.. He went to Home Depot and spoke to the people there. After, he soaked it with the hose. I think you'll have to do that every3 months depending on the spray. |
