Desiree vomiting update Does anyone have info on Metranidazole? My 2 1/2 lb. five year old was vomiting and had diarrhea last week. Although she only vomited once last Wed and Thurs, she had abnormal very loose stool Fri - Mon but no more vomiting. She went to a new vet and although I'm not in love with her, there's nothing drastic enough to keep looking further (yet). Dr. gave her an exam, no dehydration or fever. Nothing wrong on abdominal physical exam. Diagnosed her as very sensitive to food and stress. Nothing new there but no IBS or IBD. Gave her Nutragest (a natural powder with probiotics and ginger ???) Dezi had sensitivity to acidopholous but that didn't stop Dr from recommending it. She didn't do well with all the dietary changes she was experiencing. I tried rice and burger (boiled and rinsed 10 times) then chicken baby food. I should have known better. It prolonged it but she was in good spirits and had good appetite throughout. I finally got Dr to prescribe Metranidazole because she got worse and we had to go back the next day. Why didn't she prescribe it in the first place is one of the reasons I don't love Dr yet. She's holistic. So what? Does that mean she couldn't give her some relief before trying herbal stuff? Then she wanted me to start the powder at the same time as the Metranidozole. Too much at once for a sensitive girl, don't you think? I didn't do it and lied when Dr asked for an update. If I didn't know better I'd think she gets a kickback from it. Dezi is doing great now too. I'm happy but annoyed at the situation. It really scared me to be changing vets at the same time of an emergency. |
I have a whole lot of history w/ ibd/ibs/colitis w/ my Marcel - we had him on Metro/Tylan/Panacur/Amoxi - you name it. None of which truly helped. I am not a fan of Metro - while it may help initially, it can often begin to cause the symptoms it was supposed to help; it can also begin to be quite toxic after a while. I actually suspected toxicity after Marcel was on it for about 10 days, called my vet, told her my findings - and she actually agreed. Metro is *not* an easy drug - it can be quite potent and sometimes unpredictable. Tylan can be the same way - helpful at first, then causing symptoms; for other dogs, though, Tylan can be a miracle - not for us though. Keep an eye out for any odd neuro symptoms w/ the Metro as this can be a sign of toxic build up. Ginger, btw, is a very amazing herb for the tummy - so you may see some benefit there - esp. w/ the probiotics. Ginger is often used for motion sickness too. For us, the key to healing Marcel was no meds and getting him on a hypoallergenic diet so his intestines could heal and rest - so I homecooked for him for about 2 mths (whitefish based diet - I worked with a nutritionist via phone consult) - then we moved to Natures Variety Raw Frozen. Once he moved to the fish diet - he had firm poos 1.5 days later (that was after 4 mths of nothing but mushy mucousy bloody poos). So, if it were me, looking back - I'd forget the meds and follow what this new vet is telling you. I'd also stop feeding ALL chicken and beef for a good, long while. :) |
Dezi's food problems What else were your pups symptoms? What about lamb and rice? Does the whitefish have another purpose or was it the only thing that wasn't causing reactions. Is the metro toxic after a five day dose, that's what she's on? |
My Pom has been on it everyday for almost a year due to severe stomach problems. She has a couple of terminal conditions and we use it to keep her comfortable. The vet is now having me try and wean her off to every other day and then completely if possible. If Maya didn't have other issues I would look for alternatives but it works for her and we never thought she would still be with us now. |
