Yorkie Weird Pacing Behavior Do any of you have a Yorkie that pace in circles particularly when stressed or confused? Any idea why they do this and have you had any success in training them to stop? If so how did you stop this pacing??? |
do you know what triggers the stress and anxiety? there are collars and room sprays called DAP which is a calming spray.. or if you know what is causing the stress you can try rescue remedy right before the stressor. works GREAT! |
She's just generally skittish... she's very calm and happy with me, but ANY thing else causes her to get nervous... she will hide in a corner, turn her head away from anyone's attempt to pet her, she may start quivering... other than the skittishness and pacing she is perfect in every other way, very quiet, loving and loyal to me. I just wish she would not be so fearful of everyone and everything. She is 5 years old, I've had her for six months, she's a retired show dog so she is a beauty and people are naturally drawn to her... you would think as a show dog she would be well socialized, but she doesn't seem to trust other people and animals! And she has MAJOR panic attacks in thunderstorms.... panting, heart racing, body shivering to the point where you can feel the crate vibrating because of her shivering.....The breeder that use to show her said that she was caught in a thunderstorm during a show and since then she has these major panic attacks... as soon as the thunder stops she's fine. |

As for the skittishness.. it is VERY important that you don't baby her when she is upset... just go about what you do and as heartbreaking as it is (i know) don't pay attention to her until she is back to normal. You might also try something like training classes. It will get her social and build her confidence. it will bond the two of you and hopefully expose her to things. When she sees that other dogs dont' react.. she might be ok too. It sounds like you rescued her from something not so great if this is how she is. Give her time and make sure you don't reward her shy or timid behavior. and try the Rescue Remedy :) |
What is her history? Was she a rescue? A puppy mill product? If so, she might have been raised in a cage, and her response to stress would have been pacing the perimeter of her cage. |
Thanks for such quick excellent replies...the breeder had about 10 dogs that she showed and I believe she did keep them crated so maybe the crate is the reason... I did not think so initially bc she is very secure in her crate, she sleeps in it every night and goes to it when stressed but the crate could very well be why she paces. I did recently sign her up for training classes and will definitely try the rescue remedy, this is the 2nd referral I am getting for that. I have only been a part of Yorkie Talk for a month but I really have been pleased with the network of support out there!!! Thank you guys! |

I have a pup that stays in his x-pen most of the day. He runs circles in it constantly when he knows it's dinner time. He won't stop until I put his food in. He only does it at that time. I think he's just excited. He doesn't ever do this when he's out but I have several Yorkies that spin circles when they're excited. . :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
I don't have any pictures yet but will post them as soon as I stop to take some :) |
Thanks Woogie Man... so sounds like pacing is another "Yorkie Thing!!" It drives me crazy looking at it or at the least makes me dizzy! :) Hopefully if thru training and the rescue remedy I can get her to be more calm the pacing will decrease. |
