I have read a few different places on here that feeding flaxseed helps with the skin and coat. I want to do this but I don't know how much to feed him. And do I just feed it to him strait? He's 3 lbs. How much do you think he should get? Thanks!

I make home prepared meals and use about a tsp of ground flaxseed per 1/2C of food. Each yorkie then gets about 1/4C of the chicken, brown rice (sometimes), veggie mix. I use the flaxseed more for the heart health benefits.

Flax seed, which has oil in the seed, as well as many vitamins, has been shown to greatly benefit skin and hair. It can be purchased at Walmart (cheaply), and it is in many premium dog foods. Flax seed is the main ingredient of Missing Link, a popular product used by many forum members, for improving skin and hair as well as the heart. Make sure you get the ground variety, and usually you have to start slowly or it may cause gas.

I have a 4-mt female yorkie, she is a good eater she eats "Chicken soup for the Soul" puppy dry/wet.

Can I feed her some?

I don't see why not, I started Joey with a 1/4 of a tsp a day sprinkled on food, and worked up to 1/2 tsp. Like I said in the above post, some people have said that it causes gas if introduced too quickly. So if this happens reduce the amount until there body has become accustomed to it, and then gradually increase to ½ tsp per ½ cup of food.

Thank you all very much! But, since I've last posted I purchased flaxseed oil because I thought that's what I read to feed them. Will flaxseed oil be fine or should I return it and get ground?

I like the ground seed because I think it helps with digestion, but many people use the oil. You know "you" can use the oil or seed as well, it's very good for humans. I am not as certain as to the amount of oil you would use because I imagine it's very concentrated and too much oil is never a good thing.

I use the oil for all my Yorkies. The dosage recommendation I've seen is 1 tsp per 10 pounds of body weight daily. I go a little less than that for mine. They say to start with a smaller dose to avoid loose stools. I've been using it for about 6 weeks and have seen a noticable improvement in the skin texture and coat luster in all mine. I liked the results so much that I started taking it myself. I take 1 tbsp daily. Flax has many health benefits beyond just skin and hair. I haven't used the seed yet but have seen recipes online that include flax seed. Right now, Puritan's Pride vitamins has a good sale on flaxseed oil. It's the best price I've found anywhere. Revival Animal Health has it for about $7.50 for 16 oz. but right now Puritan's Pride has a better price. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :)

YAY!!! Thank you so much! I actually have ground seed that I eat in my oatmeal and malt-o-meal every day. So I have the ground stuff laying around, I just thought I needed to give him the oil :eek: He is getting neutered tomorrow so I'm going to wait for him to recover from that before I start him on it. I can't wait to see improvement in his coat! I'm letting it grow out and am trying to take as best of care of it as I can. This should really help! Thanks everyone!

Wish Epsilon luck tomorrow! He's only 3 pounds so I'm really freaked out about him getting neutered.

I use the actual Flaxseed Oil that I order from Barleans. I mix in a little less than a teaspoon for the 3 girls and a tablespoon for the hound. I just mix it in w/ their food, generally only every other day.
