Picky Eater! Hi All, Im new here...I have a 4 1/2 month old baby girl Yorkie her name is Punkin Puss. She weighs 2.1 pounds. I bought her in a petstore, she was fine the first day....then things went downhill. She started having really bad diarrhea I took her to the vet they diagnosed her with Coccidia...she was on meds for this then she started getting a hacking cough..back to the vet and she had Kennel Cough..which then turned into Pneumonia.... So she was on the meds for the Coccidia..then Meds for the Kennel Cough, and then I had to start bringing her for Nebulizer treatments...I also had to do something at home called Carpage...sitting in a hot steaming bathroom and smacking her on the sides of her body to break up any fluid in her lungs...anyways, finally all this is gone....problem is...while she was so sick she didnt want to eat...so I was having to force feed her Science Diet AD I think it was...she didnt really care for it but what could she do I was putting it in a tube and sliding it down her throat...anyways here is my dilemma...I have gone thru all kinds of foods and she doesnt like any of them...I have been giving her Cesar Filet Mignon flavor and mixing it with Cottage Cheese cause that is the only way she will eat it. I decided tonight to try the Natural Balance because I read that a lot of Yorkies really like it...well its almost 5am and I have been up for over an hour. Punkin woke up gagging and puking....so im not sure if it was from the Natural Balance...Do any of you have any suggestions on what to feed her? I tried Iams, Eukanuba, Nutro and Wellness and now Natural Balance...and of course the Cesars (soft food) for the hard stuff I tried Eukanuba, Wellness, and now she seems to semi like the Pro Jac... Any suggestions would be great! Thanks Kim |
Hi Kim! Welcome to YT :) Wow - that is some trouble you have had with your little one :( I am sorry to hear you have had so many problems with it, but unfortunately it is not new for me to hear about puppies bought at a store - I am not from the states, but from Denmark, but I have noticed a lot of talk about sickness in puppies from stores. Maybe it is because they are raised in puppy mills... I don't know what you can give your little dog to eat when she is so picky. Yorkies are very picky by nature and I went through 3-4 foods before finding one my dogs liked. Have you tried Royal Canine or Solid Gold? I think those are some of the more popular foods to give your yorkie. Best of luck with Punkin! :) (Do you have any pics of the sweetheart?) |
Hi Kim, sorry to hear about your little one........ I wanted to let you know that our baby, when she was only 8 oz....when we got her at 10 wks got really sick, 4 hrs after we brought her home, diagnosed with hypoglycemia, hypothermia and an upper respitory infections and this was from a home breeder. Anyways, after the weeks stay at the Emergency Hosp. she came thru it all fine, BUT what kept her alive were the antibiotics and GERBER BABY TURKEY FOOD......... They were feeding it to her and she took to it fine... when we got her home, I had to feed her a teaspoon every 3 hrs around the clock for about 3 wks. We have given our 2 little babies that when they just don't feel like eating....... We have gone thru Eukenuba, Royal Canine, Science Diet, some Flocken Natural food but the one that they love the best and just WHOOF it down is called " Spots Stew " by Halopets Company in Palm Harbor, Fl..... Its all natural, no fillers, preservatives, meal by-products or any of the "mystery ingredients" that are put into those dry dog foods. This product is HUMAN QUALITY, you could eat it too....... Check it out and see if any of those help your little furbaby...... Good luck !! |
When my little guys won't often, which is often, I boil chicken for them, cut it into small pieces and they eat it all up. They also of course like steak, but they only get that when we do, and it's not to often. |
She will eat what you give her. Put her in the room with the food 10 minutes, twice a day. Whether she eats it or not let her see you taking the food up. Dogs can go 3-4 days without food as long as they have water. You have to establish that you are the only way she eats and it's only for a limited time. Trust me, she will start eating. I wish I had this info when I first got my dog. You will get a lot of info about giving her all kinds of special stuff but just put the food you bought out for her like I suggested and it will turn around. Put a vegetarian in a room for a week with a hamburger and I bet that burger is gone when you get back. Same thing with a dog, they will not starve themsevles to death just like we won't if we had the chance. Sorry about the illnesses your dog went through. |
Hello all, Thank you for the suggestions...I guess I was afraid to not let her eat anything at all for a few days cause of the whole Hypoglycemia thing... I didnt want her to pass out! That would scare the bloomers off me! I will give your suggestions a try... also does anyone know if cheese is bad for them? She seems to looove cheese... and I know this is probably bad...but I have a huge Perisan cat...who she loves to pieces...he eats Iams chicken crunchies...no fish he is allergic to it....anyways, Punkin loves to steal little pieces of his crunchies and run away and eat them... can this hurt her do you think?? A Pic of Punkin Puss with her brother Nibbles 1 Attachment(s) Here is a picture of Punkin Puss and Nibbles... they love to wrestle and roll around and play.... |
Your pets look like they were "caught in the act" in that picture, it's hilarious. I think cheese depends on the dog. Give her some cheese and if she doesn't throw up or have diarhea she is fine. Just don't give her too much. |
My babies pics... 1 Attachment(s) LOL yeah I know..thats what all my co workers say!!! here is another one of Punkin Puss all by herself... |
Oh my dear! She is VERY cute! :) |
She is adorable! :) In feed Royal Canin mini bites and lil Caesars for a treat each day. |
;-) 1 Attachment(s) I will have to see if I can get some of these dog foods! I think I need to bring all my leftover closed cans of dog food and the huge bags of crunchies to the local shelters... Thank you for the compliments on Punkin she is a real sweetheart....when I brought her home and she was having all these problems people were telling me to return her...I was like hellooooo if you had a child and it had problems would you abandon he or she! Some people just dont understand so im glad I found this site and can come here and read and compare things with other people...so thank you everyone!!! |
Thats terrible that people were telling you to take her back! You are both lucky to have each other now! :) |
I know it....I got attached to her just seeing her in the pet store...I would never bring her back after I took her out of jail!!! I am to much in love with her! |
I can see how you fell in love with her. Who wouldn't? You see that sweet little face and you just want to take them home. Too bad about the sickness. Do you have some Nutrical? That should help with the appetite, too. Welcome to YT! Keep the pictures coming. |
1 Attachment(s) awwww your baby looks so much like mine!!! she is adorable..there are so many cute faces on here...funny thing is...I did want a puppy but I wanted a chiuahua..thats what I originally went shopping for! Here is one of Punkin Puss popping out of a shoebox :-) she loves boxes, bags anything crinkly... |

Kim, I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. However, I really do think that the majority of us have gone through the picky eater more than once. I was a Food Slave to Maggie, until I turned for help from some of the more experienced members. I was told to pick a quality dry food. Put it down, and THEY WILL EAT. Make sure you give them their Nutrical at least twice a day until they start eating. I started Maggie out on 1/2 container of Ceasar's for breakfast and then it was Royal Canin 33 Mini Puppy the rest of the day. Maggie only went one day without eating, and now she eats like a little pig. I was very hestitant at first with the advice, but trust the crew---IT WORKS. ABSOLUTELY NO HUMAN FOOD. |
