Dry (crusty?) skin I gave Cordy a bath today and noticed that he has dry crusty skin all over his back! It's like flaking all over him! When I brush him, it's almost like he has dandruff, today, I noticed big flakes that I can almost "peel" off.... He's not in pain, as far as I can tell, and I have noticed this dryness before, but not to this extent... any home remedies I can do to alleve this on him? Thanks! |
Chewy has really really dry skin. I would suggest trying a moisturizing shampoo as well as fish oil added to his food. It does take a while for any results to show so you may want to be on the safe side and show a vet, just in case it is somethig more serious. |
What shampoo are you using? |
Winston had this condition too when he was a few months younger....at about 4 months or so. Our groomer recommended using Aveeno oatmeal body wash for shampoo, and possibly putting a humidifier in the room where he sleeps. I hope Cordy gets some good info here;)....maybe he's swimming on his raft too much, and the chlorine is affecting his skin......I know how he hates to get out of the pool;);)!!!! Maybe we should be putting conditioner on these guys before the pool, like hairdressers tell us to do that to our locks?!:);)! |
I've been using an oatmeal moisturizing shampoo on him. Think a olive oil conditioning would work? I use it on my hair when I need a deep condition.... |

My vet gave me some stuff last year and I can't remember what it was, but I'll see if I can find out for you. |
My Caty had the same type of flaky skin on her back earlier this year. She was scratching and chewing at it constantly and really wrecking her hair. I started bathing her in tea tree shampoo and added flaxseed oil to her dinner. I also used a non medicated hot spot relief spray that PetSmart sells. It's mostly chamomille and aloe based. It took about 2 months but now she is fine. Her skin has cleared up and has a nice texture. I quit using the topical spray but still use the flaxseed oil and the tea tree shampoo. If you're interested in trying it, use about 1 tsp. flaxseed oil per 10 pounds body weight. With the tea tree shampoo, I bathe her about every 5 days. |
The fabulous solution that worked for me... I rescued my Cisco baby about a year and a half ago from a yorkie rescue in Maryland. Cisco had been through multiple homes because no one could deal with his out of control skin problems. When I picked Cisco up, he was covered in dry itchy skin that flaked off in sheets. His skin was so bad that it was actually hard and was kind of like a body of scabs. My vet was quite perplexed with Cisco's skin problem. She did a skin scraping and allergy tests and couldnt come up with a solution. She had him on Atopica a wicked expensive drug for doggies with skin problems. Nothing was working and my poor little baby was so miserable, itching all the time and he was so scabby he couldnt even stretch. I was so upset with his condition and I was determined to figure out the problem. One day i was browsing through yorkietalk and found a thread about seborrheic dermatitis. The symptoms of this condition seemed to fit with the symptoms Cisco was exhibiting. I read that you should bathe the dog with Neutrogena T-Gel. While this sounds harsh, you must make sure NOT to get it near the eyes and mouth and to rinse thoroughly. The acidity in the shampoo conteracts the seborrheic dermatitis. In less than a month Cisco was off his meds, off his allergen free food and back to normal. His skin is so soft now! He was a baldy when I got him because his hair couldnt grow through the scabs and now he is growing a full coat of hair! Using Neutrogena T-Gel has saved my little man's life and he is so happy! No itching! No flakes and he stretches comfortably! |
