Yorkies and Warm Weather Romeo is now 5 yrs old. I think he is struggling with the warm weather. He is tired and walking slower on walks. His belly feels warmer than usual and he's having trouble making a healthy bowel movement. He drinks water and he is eating his kibble as usual. Is anyone else having the same experience with older Yorkies in the warmer weather. Please help. He is my first dog and I'm worried. |
well i wouldn't say he is "older" as yorkies can live to 15.... if he was a larger breed dog he would be considered older. anyways... i think everyone's dogs are suffering from the heat this year. layla doesn't eat as much and sleeps a lot more.. our house has a/c but if we are at work she pants a lot. iw ould just be concerend that he is having a hard time going to the bathroom. maybe someone on here can help you with that. |
Bella is just as active probably because she has a doggie door and only goes out for short times in the summer. In the cooler months i have to go looking for her but in the summer she is right next to me on the couch! Just make sure that you protect their feet from the hot asphalt/concrete. I take water with me also when we go anywhere. I have a regular 20 water bottle for her and she is very willing to drink when ever i ask her. |

Sophie does not do well in heat. She does not walk very far or have much energy. However, we have really not had hot weather yet. I think Sophie does much better when it is cold. |
I would say it may be a lot easier on him if you walked him early morning or evening when things are cool. Be careful with the asphalt even then because it hold heat. Maybe add some oil to his food to help the process. |
Maggy May is only 6 1/2 months old and she has a hard time with the heat. I won't take her outside when it's so darn hot and humid out, she uses puppy pads as well as going outside to go potty, thank God for that! Do you have AC? If so, does your lil one act differently when inside in the AC? If so, maybe see if you can get puppy pads and have them use that on scorching hot days. |

My Cinnamon is only 3 but she struggles with the heat also. She is slightly overweight at 8 lbs but not too much. The only time she has difficulty is in the heat. The rest of the year she is fine. We can only go around one block once it gets above 75 or so. If its in the 80s or higher we can only walk once the sun goes down. She also pants all the time in this weather even in the air conditioned house. Ive taken her to the vet twice for this and he says there is absolutely nothing wrong. |

Well I don't need to say much about this subject, we live in Arizona !!! When I take them out to pee and poop in the backyard, I lay towels down or wet the concrete so they can walk on it...I will not take them on walks in the summer either and can't understand people jogging with their dogs in the heat...? Leave them home til the weather changes...I heard small dogs are perfectly happy to stay home...Of course, mine lov to go to the park, but that'll have to wait...Can't burn their little feet or risk heat exhaution....:Pawprint::Pawprint: |
Here in Las Vegas it's been about 104 to 107. I take Doo Doo out at about 5:45 a.m. then again at noon but she does her buisness and goes right up the stairs again, and at 8 p.m. she goes out for her last call of duty. I feel bad for her being in the house all day. But I think she's happy sleeping inside with the A/C running all day. I've only had her for a week today so I don't know how she does in cold weather, we're still getting to know each other.:aimeeyork |
