Fasting on Raw Diet also Digestive Enzymes Question We have been feeding pre-made raw for about a month now. We have tried natures variety and primal- and are going to stick to the primal because I feel like Mickey and Mallory do much better on it. I have two questions... Do those of you that feed Primal fast one day a week? The primal website suggests fasting. Quote:

I do NOT fast my dogs, especially not on pre-made. If I fed prey model, I would consider it - given the increased amount of work their systems would require. Even then though, it's not required for health - it's a choice. I think you also have to weigh the psychological effects - which, in my mind, are different in the home than in the wild. If I converted to prey model, I doubt I would fast my dogs. As far as the enzymes - the advice actually makes little sense to me. Meat in their natural raw states still contain their enzymes - it is cooking and processing that leeches them out. So, enzymes should not need to be added to raw diets. During transition, I *suppose*, you could add them if you feel it would provide additional digestive support - but the meat on its own should be enough. JMO. |
i feed mine both primal and NV.. I can't even imagine:rolleyes: fasting my little girls...they are just way too small. |
I feed Primal and don't fast. Fasting these little ones isn't a great idea. If one of my dogs has some diarrhea or is vomiting (usually from eating garbage outside), I will skip a meal and instead provide a few tablespoons of plain yogurt. Plain yogurt has acidophilous and probiotics that help a sick tummy heal itself. Fasting is meant more for larger breeds and dogs that are being fed raw, meaty bones as a part of their diet, or being fed prey model. I DO use enzymes. I like ProZyme. Enzymes are helpful in aiding your pet with absorbing the nutrients available in the raw diet. Many dogs (and humans) are unable to absorb nutrients completely as their intestines and gut are affected by environmental toxins, inflammation and more. Enzymes basically act as a stimulant in the digestive environment to the digestive tract to work at full force. I am really oversimplifying them, but I kept my dogs on the enzymes since switching to raw and see the benefits!! |
Thanks everyone for the advice! I know, I would feel so terrible fasting these babies!! I might try enzymes though.... Hey, it can't do any harm, right? |
My dogs are on prey model and NV and sometimes they fast themselves. Sometimes they don't want to eat much or any of their food and I just pick it up and refrigerate it until the next night. I don't fast them but they regulate their own eating and I don't mess with it by forcing them to eat. |
