Chemical-free Flea and Tick Prevention I found this "recipe" in the latest issue of Modern Dog and thought I would share it with you all! :) I haven't tried it but I think I'm going to.. Flea be Gone! * Peppermint Oil * Cinnamon Leaf (not Cinnamon Bark) Oil * Lemon Grass Oil * Clove Oil * Thyme Oil * A carrier oil, such as sweet almond or jojoba In a small jar fitter with an eye dropper lid, add 15mLs (1/2 oz) of a carrier oil, one drop each of Thyme, Cinnamon Leaf and Clove, and four drops each of Peppermint and Lemon Grass. Shake well before applying drops to your dog's neck and back, parting your dog's hair so that the solution is applied to the skin. Use five drops per ten lbs of body weight. Do not apply to puppies under 12 weeks of age. Apply as frequently as every two weeks. Alternately, six drops of Geranium, four drops of Peppermint, and two drops of Lavender in 15 mLs of a carrier oil can also be used to effectively repel fleas and ticks. |
Thanks for your post. I have heard of something like this but did not have the recipe. |
I may have to try this. I got the recipe for just peppermint oil mixed with water and sprayed on your pet from the Healthy Pet book and will be trying that first since I only have the peppermint oil at this time but will defiantly be keeping you recipe also. Thanks. |

A friend gives her dogs a brewer's yeast tablet everyday for flea control. Says she has never had any flea problems. |
Thank you very much for this recipe. I am going to locate some good quality oils and give it a try. I DO NOT like using poison on my babies :) |
Thanks for the recipe. I may have to give that a try. We've been using a mix of distilled water, lemongrass oil and peppermint oil as a spray repellant. Have to use it every day, usually two times. But the yorks smell great and so far, no fleas. We're also sprinkling the carpets with Borax once a week, leaving it for a couple of hours then vacuuming it up. It's been a bad year for fleas/ticks around here. The only drawback to what we've been doing is that it's easy to forget to spray them, and I like to find someplace to go while the Borax is sitting. |
I'm going to try this recipe out! Thanks for posting it. :) Quote:

No problem! Thanks for bumping it back up! :) Now that summer's right around the corner, I'm sure many people will find this useful. |
And here is more help for you. Chinaroad Lowchens of Australia - Ticks, fleas, bees, flies, snakes and other gremlins! And how to deal with them! |
I ordered Best Yet from the CedarCide Store. It is suppose to kill fleas and ticks and other insects. It says it has no chemicals in it. I don't want anything on my babies that will harm them. The company says you can use it on puppies and children. It is suppose to arrive Fri. I will let you know if it works. Keeping fingers crossed. |
Dumb Question does anyone have any actual success with these home made cocktails? |
I use eucalyptus oil mixed with water that I spray around the house and on their beds. I also mix eucalyptus oil with their shampoo. This really helps and they rarely have fleas. I really prefer to use natural remedies on my dogs. |
Now I just have to order all of these essential oils... I hope they arrive before flea season does! |
