Why is he so itchy? Why tear stains? Hi Everyone, This is Charlie's mom, and we are new. We were welcomed earlier and appreciate all the good responses. Anyway, I want to know why Charlie is itchy? He is on Blue Buffalo puppy food Chicken & Brown Rice/Lamb & Brown Rice (no corn, wheat, soy,) he loves it, he is on advantage, so we know he doesn't have fleas, his skin looks good (not dry or flaky, he has the softest cotton coat, I don't get it. Is it normal that dogs just have the itchies?Another thing are those darn tear stains, I just put him on Angels Eyes, but after reading some of the other posts I am not sure I want to continue, I also use bottled water instead of tap, anyone have suggestions?? Thanks!! |
could it be you are not washing the shampoo or conditioner out completely? that can cause itchiness I hear. also, what shampoo/conditioner are you using? it should be one especially formulated for pets. sometimes a pet oatmeal shampoo can help itchiness as well I dont use angel eyes or anything.. when i first got my pup someone suggested i just clean her eyes daily with warm water and a cotton ball.. this has worked nicely and she has no stains as they have not had time to form |
You may want to check out this site about allergies. Is Your Pet Itching for Relief? Stella has allergies and is currently taking Atopica which has helped the scratching alot. Also, there is a Spa Fresh Facial Scrub which I've heard is good to remove tear stains. |

I have been using the same shampoo/conditioner since I brought home Charlie at 8 weeks, it is called Pet Aromatics, it has a coconut and honey smell to it and it says it has green tea, lime flower, vanilla bean, coconut oil, and a ton of other good things, it has no Detergents, No Parabens, Alcohol or Phosphates and I love the deoderizer spritzer. But this is so weird, for the first time ever I turned over the bottle just now and read the ingredient list and the third ingredient is corn, everything else is great, but corn, I am stunned, I wonder if this is what is causing the allergy or itchyness, and I have never heard of corn being in a pet shampoo, have any of you??? I think I should discontinue, what kind of shampoo do you all recommend?? |

Sounds like an allergy to me, especially since he has runny eyes. I'm not familiar with that food, but we do have a diet section, and maybe you could check there. I know many members had to switch several times before they found a food that didn't produce allergies in their dog. |

Lots of people have used oatmeal shampoo for dogs that suffered from allergies. |
Thanks, I am going to make some changes in the food and shampoo, and see how it goes. |
Joey used to have the tear stains, not so much stains, but runny eyes, as a puppy, I read about giving them distilled water, and that the mineral in regular water caused this. I personally didn't believe it, but I thought I would test it. Sure enough the distilled water stopped the tearing, I didn't know if it was a coincidence or not, then one day I noticed the tearing again, I checked with hubby to make sure Joey hadn't gotten any regular water, and he confessed he had given him some. Every now and then I would test my theory and the tears returned each time. Finally, when Joey was about 8 months old we tried regular water, and we haven't had any tearing since. So, I am pretty sure the bottle water helped with Joey, but there may have been other factors involved such as "teething", but his food remained the same the whole time. By the way, if you decide to test the bottle water theory, Walmart has a gallon container of purified water that is made especially for baby's formula, and it has added chloride, something that regular bottled water lacks. I think it takes about 2-3 days to completely stop the tears. |
Changing Reese's food over to wellness eliminated his itching AND ear tearing. |
Thanks for all your input, I will be starting the process of elimination today and see how things go. For sure I am changing the shampoo, corn in it, I'm still scratching my head on that one. I have started on the bottled water, and if need be I will change food to Wellness if the itchyness doesn't go away. Thanks Again! |
