Heartworm meds dosage? My vet gave me a box of Iverhart at my last appointment. The smallest dose they have in Iverhart is for dogs 6 to 12 pounds. Lily is 3.8 right now (at 12 weeks), and the vet said I could go ahead and give it to her. Just wondering what you all thought before I go ahead and do that. And what do you do about heartworm stuff in dogs under 6 pounds fully grown if that's the case?? Thanks in advance! You guys are all GREAT!! :animal-pa |
There's other brands of heartworm meds out there.... Interceptor's smallest dose is intended for dogs that weight 2 - 10 lbs. Maybe see if your vet carries that, he might let you exchange the Iverhart for it. (Welcome to INTERCEPTOR® Homepage - Novartis Animal Health US, Inc.) |
I use Heartguard Plus and the one I get is for dogs up to 25 pounds. It has a Yorkie on the box. I give the whole thing once a month and haven't had any problems. |
Interceptor has the smallest dose but it is about 5 times more potent than it needs to be so they can make the claim that it kills intestinal parasites. All heartworm medications have a terrible dosing system if they are premeasured. It is really what you are comfortable with but I would not cut the pills in half. |
I have always used Inteceptor for mine. The schnauzers have been on it all their life. Tina is a toy and she is not much bigger than our yorkie, Kayla. Kayla's pill is real tiny. I can't believe your vet didn't tell you it was okay, or what dose or something. I don't know, lately I am paranoid about all meds. Even mine. I am now so scared of the vacinations. I had a friend that the vet was vacinating her little pom ever six months. Can you believe? But, I would definenatly find out before I gave it to her. She is really tiny. |

Yeah, the vet just said it was fine to go ahead and give it to her, but I don't know... I'm pretty wary about any kinds of medicine. I think I'm just going to save it till her next vet appt. next Thursday and see what she says again then. Anybody else out there using Iverhart? |
Bumping this old thread. Just got a box of Iverhart Max and it says it's for 6-12 lb dogs. Charlie weighed in at 4.5 lbs yesterday. The lady at the front desk said I could probably cut them in half then get 12 doses out of the box or until he reaches 6 lbs. He was there for grooming so didn't see vet around. She is vet's wife that works there. I've read here not to cut the chew. What do you think? |

So would people suggest giving the whole pill? |

I am wondering the same thing, I gave Sheldon 1/2 a pill when he was 11 weeks, he was less than 3 lbs. He threw up a little and I am wondering if it was too much but the vet said that cutting the pill might not give him all the medicine he needs to be protected. What should I do then? Sheldon will be 14 weeks on Monday. he is 3.4 lbs now. |
