Bald Spot? Hi all, It's been forever since I've posted on YT. I've been super busy with Nursing School. Anyway, Ferdinand has had this bald spot on his right hip/back area that is about 3 square inches. It's been scraped and tested for fungi and that was negative. There is no redness and he doesn't bite at it... it's just bald. It's getting bigger very, very slowly. He also bites at his front paws, but I don't know if that's related or not. I thought maybe it was a food allergy. He was on an all natural human-grade food from a local store, so I switched him to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, but that didn't help. So I switched him to Canidae All Life Stages - didn't help. Now he's back on Chicken Soup. This happened over a period of like 18 months, so it's not like I put him on the food and only waited 2 weeks to see if it would help. He was on each for at least 6 months. Since it doesn't seem to be the food, I looked toward the shampoo. I was using an oatmeal shampoo from Petsmart, so I switched him to Mink Sheen. Didn't help. Now he's on a natural shampoo from Sprouts, think the brand is Castor Oil or something. It's for sensitive skin. Still no luck. Does anyone have any input on what the heck could be causing this??? |
I'm sorry I don't have any ideas. Have you tried taking him to a dermatologist? They may have more experience with this type of thing. |
bald spots Well I actually experienced this with my older dog which is not a yorkie but a mixed terrier, my friend who has a yorkie has experienced this and my male yorkie is starting...so the last few years I have been hearing about dogs having the same symptoms. We thought it was food, shampoo and changed it but things did not change. so as far as my Yorkie, Skipper, he was put on Steroids before he started losing his hair. I noticed he was starting with crusty ear tips and scabs through his body. I know that the he will shortly get bald spots. So to prevent that I took him to the vet. Good Luck!! |
romeo has a bald spot from his rabies shot. check where he had his rabies shot. |
Are you sure "its" getting bigger - or is he just getting bigger and therefore, the spot growing w/ him? Check to see if he got shots in this area. My Wylie had the same thing happen w/ a shot - and then a bald spot. As for the allergies and paw biting - could be food related or seasonal right now. Have you eliminated ALL chicken for 6 weeks yet? That would be a good thing to try. After that, I would then try Raw Frozen. :) |

I also agree with Wylie's Mom, as usual :p, and would consider a raw diet or an elimination diet. I prefer trying raw before going through the elimination... |
bald spot I must have misunderstood sorry. :( I will definitely check where his rabies shot was done. It actually was last week and seems fine. I he goes back to the vet this Friday for more shots so I will mention this to be prepared. Thanks :) |
Hi! My Yorkie had similiar symptoms in November. I took her to the regular vet for six weeks straight, and he finally sent me to a Vet Dermotologist. She was finally diagnosed with a vaccine reaction - delayed in showing symptoms. I don't know if this helps. Good luck and I hope all goes well. |
The vet that I took him to in order to find out what was causing the bald spot is different than the vet that administered his rabies vaccine. He did mention that it could be a vaccine reaction. I'll call his old vet today to find out where his rabies vaccine was given. Thanks for the great advice! |
