Poultry based diet best? Our groomer, who also specializes in nutrition, told us that Yorkies do better on a poultry based diet since they can break down the food better and it is not as hard on their kidneys. We are currently transitioning from Royal Canin to Solid Gold Wee Bits. Solid Gold is Bison and Salmon based...not sure if this is considered too rich for a Yorkie. What are your thoughts and any brands in particular that you recommend? We prefer sticking to kibble vs. raw. :aimeeyork |
Hi and WELCOME! :) Not sure what your groomer is getting it - but it doesn't make much sense to me. If you were to call up a bunch of vets - or heck, just do a survey here - and ask "what were dogs w/ food allergies eating?" - most of them would probably say chicken. Any major Animal Nutritionist will tell you (either directly, or in their papers) either anecdotally or statistically that chicken is the (or one of the) most highly allergenic meats to canines. This is probably due to what happens to chickens in rendering plants. Because, to that point, dogs who ARE allergic to regular chicken are usually not allergic to free-range, organic, raw chicken. But I digress a bit. My point is: a lot of the chicken in kibbles is not a very healthy chicken to begin with. That's why most "allergy kibbles" are anything BUT chicken (and beef) - the 2 most highly allergenic meats. So, as far as being "easy on the kidneys" - that statement doesn't really make any physiological sense to me. The most "hypoallergenic" protein, for canines, is generally fish. As for the kibbles you mention - Solid Gold is far superior and Bison/Salmon would be way better than chicken. Of course, this is just my humble - but strong - opinion. This is my 2 cents and how I'm spendin' it. :D |
