maybe fleas?! PLEASE HELP! i think my peanut has fleas. i noticed the black "flea dirt" on her neck underneath her collar and was appalled because she has been on sentinel for about 6 months now. i learned quickly, though, that sentinel only sterilizes the fleas and does not kill them. my vet recommended then that i also put on a topical to kill the fleas. i put on advantage earlier today. the dosage was for under ten pounds and peanut is about 10 pounds exactly. tonight, about 10-12 hours later, she is still itching. i looked at her joints and under her legs, between her legs and saw nothing. then, twice, i looked at the lighter colored fur on her head. both times i saw a quickly moving insect. it was running really fast and it startled me both times i saw it. i feel like it was bigger than a flea, but i don't know for sure. i HATE bugs and so it made me really squeamish. there aren't any vets open tomorrow, naturally... any suggestions? i am so grossed out!:mad: |
Until you can get something like Advantage, give her a bath. :aimeeyork The problem with fleas is that they go everywhere in the house. Your going to have to vaccum and clean very well, especially where she sleeps. :animal-pa Fleas can be such a problem, and especially with toy dogs. :animal-pa |
i am overwhelmed by everyone's helpful response! ::smile:: |
Give her a bath in Dawn dish detergent. Be careful of the eyes. It is said it kills ticks. I have only used FrontlinePlus and never saw a tick in four years. It's the orange box and goes up to 25lbs I believe. Fleas can make your baby misreable and your home unlivable. Good luck. I'm sure you'll be ok since your trying to get a grip on the situation. Frontline is the way to go. |
You're going to have to treat at least two - and possibly four - things: 1) Give your pet a flea bath to kill what's on her. Buy some Frontline or Advantage and treat her as soon as she's dry. 2) You'll need to treat your house ASAP; they're probably in the carpet and maybe on the furniture. Get to the pet store and get the help of an employee for a product to treat both of those. 3) If your dog has been in your car, you'll need to spray that as well. 4) You may want to consider treating your yard. There are lots of good products to use, and many are sold at discount and hardware stores. You can get a pretty big jug of spray for about $10. |
Thanks for the info! I think I have all of that done with the exception of the furniture and my car. I will spray those ASAP! Quote:
