Biting feet - skin sensitivity?? Another question (can you tell I'm new to this?!): our little pup, Sadie Rose, about 15 weeks old, seems to chew her feet quite a bit, especially when she first wakes up in the morning, but off and on during the day, too. I mentioned it to the vet, who asked about her food (Wellness puppy), and then gave me some special shampoo for sensitive skin. Is allergic/sensitive skin very common in Yorkies? If your Yorkie has sensitive/allergic skin, what are they allergic/sensitive to and what do you use for shampoo? Have you had success with shampoo alone, or did you have to adjust diet as well? Is Wellness Puppy food bad for allergic reactions?? Thanks, Wendy-Lee |
It seems like it is quite common for Yorkies to have itchy skin due to food allergies (particularly corn). It seem that it is very frequently discussed here on YT. I know there are some who have to keep their little ones on med for their allergies--I hope that will not be the case for your little furbutt. Many seem to have found relief by changing diets. I know that many of the fillers in food--rice, corn, etc trigger these allergies, sometimes it's something else altogether. I've had to feed something ours don't normally eat in a pinch and it's caused Trixie to itch like crazy (biting feet and scratching ears). Luckily I seem to have avoided any allergens w/ their diet and the only allergies I have with mine (knock on wood) is one that is allergic to shellfish. Hopefully someone else who has been down this path before will be able to offer you some great tips to help you deal with getting your baby to feeling better. |
Foot chewing/licking is the cardinal sign of allergies. But, allergies in a puppy THIS young would be incredibly odd - bc she should still be protected by her Momma's antibodies. Because of this, it almost makes me wonder if her Mom had yeast - and that she passed it on to Sadie. I would get her to the vet, explain the symptoms, and make SURE the vet checks feet, between the toes, inside ears, the arm pits, the tummy, the neck - all of those hidden/moist areas where yeast can grow. Yeast is easily passed on to offspring through the birthing canal - so IF the Mom happened to have it, the pups would too. And you would want to catch yeast ASAP, believe me! :) |
We have/had the same problem with chewing feet. People are accurate in that it is most likely allergy related. We wash feet after returning from outside and sometimes use a spray that really works well for us. Its called Betagen, prescription only, comes in a spray and we apply it to the itchy foot and they get almost instant relief. Hope this helps |
My Maltese as well as my Yorkie used to lick and bite their feet. I also saw some dried up scab like things. I took them to the Vet and he took a scraping and examined it under the microscope. He then showed me the microscopic small Harvest Mites, tiny tiny red mites. It look liked small ticks under the microscope, Really ugly little buggers. He gave me a good dip which took two dippings each before they were gone. I have two very big trees in which doves sleep and according to the Vet, he suspects it comes from them. I also had to throw Sulphere powder under the trees. |
