Problems getting 9 week old to eat Im feeding her Eukanuba small breed puppy dry food. Its the same the breeder was feeding, and the breeder was mixing in soft. She really wont eat it unless it put in a teaspoon or so of soft food. I put in Pedigree puppy soft food and mix it up. The vet wants me to just give her dry food now, but she won't eat it if its just dry. I've heard about that yorkies can get hypoglycemic, so I'm worried if she doesn't eat. Any suggestions on what I can try? |
I would switch to a quality canned food. How about Canidae or maybe Evangers? It is okay to feed all wet food. |
I have never heard of those brands. Where do you find them? The only places I have around here are Petsmart and the local pet store where I buy the Eukanuba. |

I had the same problems with my Yorkie when I got him at 9 weeks...i thought he was going to die because he would not eat for several weeks. Not sure if my method was the best method, but I slowly took him off of Eukanuba using more higher quality brands. At first I thought it was the brand of food, so I literally went thru several kinds of dry kibble...he still didn't eat as much. I literally hand fed him and/or would put his kibble out in a little trail on the floor.After awhile I would just leave his food there and figured he would get hungry enough and would eat...that worked! |
Yes, hypoglaucemia is a big problem for this little ones, especially when they are so small. (9 weeks is really too young to have been placed in a forever home...hind sight's 20/20, eh?) For the time being, I would stick with what your little one was eating--your furbutt is probably having a hard enough time adjusting to his new home without having to adjust to a new diet all at the same time. Once he has adjusted, then gradually switch him over to something new--bonus, that means you have time to do lots of research on what you think is a better food for him. You will have to do some trial and error runs--when you have found a good match for him, it will be quite evident from the results you see. |
what about putting a little bit of water in her dry food..??? I do think you should get a better food... but thats jmho good luck! |
Im going to stick with the Eukanuba kibble for now, but instead of the pedigree soft I bought some Natural Balance soft food from Petco. I figured that small change would be for the better anyway. I did some research and that was the best one I could find that was available to me. Anyway, I mixed some of it with the kibble and she actually ate! :) Hopefully that will keep up. She seemed to not like the Pedigree food AT ALL! My only problem is that it only comes in big cans. I will only keep it in the fridge for 3 days then throw it out. I guess I always thought dog food was just dog food until I read some articles about it. Think I could freeze some? I also picked up NutriCal in case of emergency. (BTW I saw another woman in Petco with a Yorkie. I talked to her. Her dog was 1 year old and was the same size as my 9 week old! |

When my little one was doing that mix in a little bit of chicken brooth in the Eukanuba dry food (she is still on this, 4 months old, but seems to like it, will eventually switch to something better). I also used the Nutrical, I would put a little in the food, and that got her to eat some of the food as she ate the paste. Good luck! |
A bit of advice. If your pup doesn't want to eat something, it is usually a good indicator that the food does not appeal to them. Many times the smell alone stops them from eating. A better quality wet food is very important to good health. |
Darcy was on pedigree food (kibble mixed with a little wet) when i first bought her home 5 weeks ago, I have heard really bad reviews about it, and she was always scratching too, so I have changed her over to really good brands the dry is James Wellbeloved and the wet is natures diet (uk foods), but I only add a tiny amount of wet to mix with the dry , as that's how she likes it. If that's how your baby likes to eat it, I don't see the problem. I have also seen bad reviews about eukanuba, but can't remember where |
