when can he go outside already?? I know that after the first full cycle of the vaccines only the rabbis shot is required. I was wondering which vaccines are required in general from the beginning and which I can avoid. My puppy hasn't had any of the shots yet so I wanted to know what to tell his vet about which shots I want Mickiey to have and which I don't. Also, Mickiey is infected with Kennel Cough would you guys suggest that I wait with the shots until he gets better or you think that it is safe to vaccinate him while sick? The vet tells me to wait but without the shots I can't take him outside and kennel cough may last 2-3 months and than the process of vaccines takes some time- when will I be able to take my puppy outside already?? |
i would also wait until he is better. He needs all of his puppy shots up to a year.. however i would avoid the Lepto shot. Layla got it when she was a puppy and had a horrible reaction to it. It it not recommended for dogs under 10lbs. and most have a bad reaction. I dont' get the kennel cough vaccine either. layla has had the vaccine and got kennel cough anyways so i avoid it. I also only get the every 3 year rabies vaccine. hope this helps |

Those vaccines take so much out of their little bodies, I can't even imagine subjecting a compromised immune system to 4-5 different types of viruses. |

As far as when can he go outside, if you start vaccinating really late (after about 16 weeks) he could probably go out with only one round. The only reason multiple rounds have to be given is because they interfere with maternal antibiodies and both the vaccine and the maternal antibodies are "useless". If you start vaccinating later the dog doesn't have any maternal antibodies and the vaccine will "take". Some vets would say to give two rounds just to be sure. So it isn't so much how many rounds but it is about when they are started and if they take. Giving two rounds at about 16-20 weeks would be plenty but some vets will insist on three. So while your pup would probably be fully protected about one week after the first round of vaccines as long as they are given after 16 weeks, I would do at least two rounds before going outside just to be sure. I hope this isn't confusing. |
